I found the style of writing of this book difficult to read, as it did not flow, and frequently had to skim back to find out who characters were as they had not made enough impression the first time round. Having said that, I enjoyed the descriptions of both people and places, and it fit in rather well with the last book which I read, David Niven's 'Bring on the Empty Horses', which was also all about Hollywood. I have come to the conclusion that Raymond Chandler's books are not for me, and can only imagine that they are listed as 1001 books as they represent a certain style of detective novel from a particular era. Perhaps someone who prefers murder and mystery would enjoy it more.
