So I finally finished this after a very long month and a half. It was an extremely difficult read to get through and I was very disappointed that it wasn't an easier read. I found it sad how things turned out in the end.

I enjoyed the book after slogging through long and necessary exposition to set the background story. I found interesting how many different commanders there were of the Union forces - something that was not taught well in the schools I attended.

The book was OK. I wonder if it would have enjoyed quite as much success had it not been for the preceding book written by the author's father. I also found it predictable that it ended with an obvious hook into another sequel.

All in all, I think it was a worthwhile read.
