This book is being reserved for the First Sentence Virtual Bookbox hosted by collectorkerri. It was just added it to the VBB today. I wonder who will choose this book based on this first sentence:
"I was sitting in a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster."

Received with thanks :)
This is a compelling, infuriating book, even more so since it's a true story. The kids are remarkable, the parents make me so angry and frustrated that I simply don't have the words to describe them. And yet they have their moments too, particularly the father.
I like the way Wells writes about her childhood. It's not a pity party, but instead a very lucid, at the same time touching and calm narrative of her formative years. Recommended!

Thanks for the wishlist book Annimanni !
What a life, what a memoir! Can this be true? While reading I felt all this: anger, joy, desperation, disbelief, admiration, sadness, pity and almost also the hunger in my stomach! The Walls family led a life that is almost unimaginable to me and what made me especially furious was the fact that the parents had it voluntarily!
But one feeling is missing totally from Jeannette´s memoir: bitterness. And I think that it is good, because without bitterness and accusals in it, Jeannette makes this a real memoir, a story about her family that will hold together come what may.

I will give this to Flower78 at the monthly PKS meeting 10.2.15.
Thanks a lot for this book, Tyrnimarja! I'll try to read this quite soon, because the book got such praise by Tyrnimarja and Annelis. :) Actually I already started reading the first page...
For me this was mostly a sad, but interesting reading experience. It's hard to believe that it's a true story. I can't understand why and how the parents didn't see the reality, the way of living they were offering for their children. I was so happy when their children realized that there are also other ways of living and that there are chances to improve your life by making different choices.
I offered this book on Finnish First Sentence Virtual Bookbox (EVK-virtuaalipussi) and it was quickly chosen. She'll receive it by mail.

This was so sad story. I almost didin´t wont to read it, but I red it. Was nice that the children did things differently. I think for me it was more about timing when I red this. Maybe some other time I would have got more out of this book.
