9 out of 10

Just finished reading this book and I think Carolyn Parkhurst did an outstanding job with her first book. I read The Lovely Bones recently, and The Dogs of Babel has a similar wistfulness about it, only it is told from the perspective of a grieving husband and how he deals with the death of his wife and the mysterious way she died.

The only problem I had with this book is that it was slightly unfocused - it starts out with the mysterious death of Lexy, the wife of a college professor, then goes on to the romance of the husband and wife, then on to an underground cult doing research in teaching dogs to speak. Although all three elements were interesting, I think it needs a little more work in tying these elements together.

This book will be sent off to ellymae58 tomorrow.

Great book. Bad title.
The main character's exploits with the dog made me laugh out loud; the ending made me cry. I was very much drawn into the storytelling. I agree with carlissa: an outstanding first novel.

Thank you so much for sharing this book, carlissa!

I was kind of depressed by this book. It was such a sad story. I don't really know what else to say about it. I'll be passing it on to the next person in the ring.

This is an incredibly heartbreaking book about a man who loses his wife, then tries to make a connection with her through their dog, Lorelai. One of the best fiction debuts of the year.

I loved this book!

There is one section I found simply amazing. It's like Carolyn Parkhurst totally stole my thoughts and put them into words in a well organized paragraph.

I was curious about the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed and did a little research. They are beautiful. Here' s a picture of one I found on a website. His name is Brick.

I will send the book out to 16stepper on Monday. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.

The Dogs of Babel has arrived in Arizona. Can't wait to read it, but it goes in my pile of rays waiting for my eyes. I have no a/c and the forecasted temp for the weekend is 104, so I anticipate, I won't be moving much. Dip in the pool, read, dip in the pool, read, dip in the pool, read....

This is an enchantingly haunting tale of grief. Beautifully written, compelling protagonist, and, of course, a dog. Gumbo and I know a male Rhodesian Ridgeback from the dog park, Bailey. He is one of the most handsome dogs I know, excepting Gumbo, of course, who is THE most handsome. The things our dogs could tell us... but perhaps they are too wise. They know we must work through them ourselves. And so, they withhold their speech to remain mysterious in their unconditional love.

This will go out to MissQ on Monday.

Wow! What a story this was! It was heart-wrenching (I almost cired at one point and I never do that with books) and so engaging. I could really feel what Paul was going through (which is probably why I felt so sad at the end). I didn't agree with the decisions Lexy made but it did make me think about what I would do in a similar situation. I was so involved by the end of this book (which only took me a couple of days to read) that I just had to talk about it (my husband was the lucky one there :-)). I also just wanted to hug Lorelei, she seemed like such a vunerable, sweet dog.

I'm definitely recommending this book to my friends! I hope to see Parkhurst write more boks in the near future...

This will be off to Mamikaem as soon as I get the address.

I am thrilled that this book arrived. I am really looking forward to reading this book. Part of the reason is because of Lorelei. Months ago I read a blurb about this book and I just loved that it included a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Also loved that she is named Lorelei as I love that name from watching the TV show Gilmore Girls.

I should be able to start this in a day or two. Thanks so much carlissa for sharing this with all of us.

I am so thankful that I had the chance to read this book. My emotions were on a roller coaster while reading this book, from laughing to crying. Even now I can tell you that is in on page 66 where the tears first sprouted. So heartbreaking the question “Go get Lexy.” It was an amazing first novel. Looking forward to reading more from Ms. Parkhurst.

THANK YOU carlissa!!

I totally forgot to journal this - sorry! I really enjoyed this modern day fairy tale, especially since the premise (teaching a dog to talk) was so intriguing. The writing was wonderful and I can't wait to see more from Parkhurst. Will be sending it back as soon as I get Carlissa's address.

The Dogs of Babel has made it home! It almost had to stay at the post office, though, as it was shoved into my tiny mailbox and I had a hard time getting it out! Maybe it was trying to tell me something? My daughter wanted to read this book, but when she's done, I may send it out on another journey.

Thank you everyone for participating in this bookring!

I just couldn't get into this book, maybe its just my mindset. I couldn't get past the first few chapters too depressing. Guess because of all thats going on in the world I just wasn't in the mood to read. Sorry. I am putting the book back onto my TBR list so I can maybe read it in the future as I have heard great things about the book, but I don't want to hold the ring up trying to read it. thanks for sharing.

This is a very interesting book. It read very easily and pulled me on since the very beginning. I love how the present interwines with the past and we can find out more about the main characters. It was very moving and very imaginative.

It's going to go tenneth soon. Thanks for letting me read it.
