Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery
4 journalers for this copy...
The most malevolent criminal in sex trafficking is: poverty.
And I must say the chapter on India / Nepal is the most cruel, the most painful - of course, that subcontinent is vast with a tremendous population, so the numbers of sex-slaves is in proportions, but the way of "gaining" those sex-slaves, of trafficking and exploiting is beyond anything.
In all the other countries it is not better, the savagery and brutality of the traffickers is unbelievable - dead slaves mean nothing to them, except loss of money.
I think it is useful to have a look at those different sex-discricts and sex-streets all over the world via "Google Earth".
Abook with most impressive testimonials, well researched with many facts and figures. Sex-trafficking ist really big bucks business.
An absolute must read!

This book is off to the UK.
Another installment of the book-man-8 slavery bookspiral was waiting for me on my desk when I arrived at the office today. Thanks to book-man-8 for generating such an interesting spiral which is providing me with a lot of research material! I've still got two books from earlier on in the spiral so I will endevour to get them moving before reading these.
This book is heavy going and not something you'll want to read if you are of a sensitive disposition because the information presented is appalling and true. I have to admit that I did not attempt to read and absorb all the statistics, of which there are many, in this book. The huge appendices highlights the level of diligent, genuine research put into this book by Siddarth Kara and this is further reinforced by the fact that the depth of research and some of the analysis reads much like a PhD thesis in places. An excellent volume highlighting once again Man's Inhumanity to Man (although in most of the cases it is actually Man's inhumanity to Woman that is being covered here). The most depressing thing about the entire book is that so much trafficking is not observed or documented that you can't help but get the feeling that Kara's stats are probably wide of the mark with the picture being an even grimmer one than is presented in the book.
This book is now travelling off to Penelopewanders who is next in line for this spiral. Thanks again to book-man-8 for providing the reading material - I still have more of this spiral in my possession and shall try to get them all moving soon.

This arrived here today... It will sit on the back burner a tiny bit as I have other rings to read first and I just finished and sent off the last in the spiral. I find I appreciate a breather in between books in this spiral, but as there seem to be few of us participating, I guess there's no harm if the books mosey along slowly.
Thank you again for making these books available, book-man-8, and for sending on, shovelmonkey. I love the postcard of the sinking girl...

Not exactly light reading- and it certainly made me think twice about the massages I enjoyed in Thailand! At times the actual prose of the book irritated me - convoluted and unclear sentences which made me wonder why the author hadn't called on a proper editor. At some point either the writing improved or I no longer was disturbed by the style - presumably because I was more caught up in the various narratives. I appreciate the framework for action outlined towards the end. I too found many of the graphs difficult to decipher.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Mea Culpa! I'm so sorry this has been here so long... and today just as I was about to parcel it I realized I had never made the photocopies I'd intended to! I realized if I didn't post it right away it would be yet another several days before this and the next in the spiral finally headed out. Ah well, I guess I'll just have to order this one for our school library or something. Finally heading towards Limerick.
Thanks for making all these books available.
Thanks for making all these books available.
This looks like an interesting but depressing book. I think I would only be able to read this book a bit at a time.
