Manga / Shojo

Crafty drawing, killer plot, and a great pace. I was hooked within the first chapter.

I'm taking these three books (listed below) from k00kaburra's Manga bookbox; I'd been intrigued by the series since I came across its TV Tropes entry and found that what I had thought was a vampire is really a tengu, a crow-demon. [Whether there's a practical difference remains to be seen!] Anyway, I have fond memories of the tengu Haruka in Tactics, so it'll be interesting to see how this one compares. Many thanks!

Later: Quirky story of a girl with "the sight" - and also with some vague memories of a childhood friend whom she thinks of as her first love. [No points for guessing where that's going to go!] Turns out Misao is a Very Special Person, of whom there's only one per century - and her gifts are going to make her life rather complicated (and possibly very short). It seems that if a demon drinks her blood it gains long life, if it eats her flesh it gains eternal youth, and if it makes her its bride, "his clan will prosper". One demon is prepared to devour her, but then Kyo shows up, claiming that she'll be his bride (but he does want just a taste of blood first - so kinky!).

In order for there to be a story, the heroine has to have some reason NOT to immediately fall for the tall, dark and handsome fellow who was her childhood sweetheart, and who wants to marry her (and also protect her from all the other demons who want to devour and/or "marry" her themselves). And so there is, leading to lots and lots of humor/drama/horror/suspense/romance/etc... along with many lovely illustrations of handsome guys with wings, which doesn't hurt!

I liked the bits in which we learn more about Kyo, including his current household (with cute-but-hapless little Taro). And at first I hoped that the appearance of Shuhei, a handsome fox-demon, would provide some interesting romantic rivalry - but he turns out to be seriously nasty. In fact, poor Misao seems to be falling into worse and worse danger - and it isn't clear that Kyo could save her even if she could decide to trust him...

Volume Two

Okay, so another high school girl discovers that she has some unusual power? I suppose they have one in every classroom! But it does look like the type I like, and I am glad to find three volumes together, which doesn't happen very often.

Misao happens to be an exceptionally delicious human being -- to demons. Her blood will heal demons, her flesh will grant eternal youth, and making her a bride will bring prosperity to the clan. As a result, she is plagued by demons and ghosts.

A tall, dark and handsome tengu claims to be Misao's childhood love and has returned to make her his bride. Meanwhile, a fox demon is vying for her too. Too bad for them, Misao isn't keen on paranormal romance... However, it's obvious she just needs a little conviction of Kyo's love, since she remembers very little of him. There are lots of kinky scenes, as Kyo's lick heals Misao's wounds, and this girl gets injured A LOT.

I'm hooked on this series! Found out that it has 13 volumes and still going... yikes.

And oh yes, little Taro is super cute!!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

When he looked up again Tas had gone. Rising to join the others, he caught sight of something small and abandoned on the floor. "Tas you forgot your pipe." He picked it up and then saw words carved into the wood he had not seen before. Find the music, find the magic.
"Did you carve this?"
Tas did not turn. "Yes," he said, reluctantly. "I have to leave it."
"But, Tas, why?"
Tas squared his shoulders as though firming some resolve. But still he did not turn. "Because the shepherd said that it could only be used once. Thats why I can't get the pipe to play that song-or any song. I've used the magic." He took a deep breath and went on. "And he said that once I found the magic I had the pass the pipe on." he paused and then he did turn, a scamp's humor in his long brown eyes. "It's going to be a long winter. I'm going to leave it here for someone else to find."
