Book Description:
Rural Wisconsin, 1909. In the bitter cold, Ralph Truitt, a successful businessman, stands alone on a train platform waiting for the woman who answered his newspaper advertisement for "a reliable wife." But when Catherine Land steps off the train from Chicago, she's not the "simple, honest woman" that Ralph is expecting. She is both complex and devious, haunted by a terrible past and motivated by greed. Her plan is simple: she will win this man's devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is that Truitt--a passionate man with his own dark secrets--has plans of his own for his new wife. Isolated on a remote estate and imprisoned by relentless snow, the story of Ralph and Catherine unfolds in unimaginable ways.

With echoes of Wuthering Heights and Rebecca, Robert Goolrick's intoxicating debut novel delivers a classic tale of suspenseful seduction, set in a world that seems to have gone temporarily off its axis.

This was a quick read that really kept my interest. Even though I didn't really like any of the characters in the story, I was constantly finding out something new about each complex character as the story progressed. Their lives and often deceptive actions kept me totally engrossed. All of the characters had sordid secrets to hide and during the novel you weren't always sure what was truth and what was fiction. Very fascinating read that kept you guessing on the outcome up until the very end. Would recommend this one! Great read to finish up 2009.

This was a very interesting read. The story takes place in Wisconsin around 1907 during a bitter cold and snowy winter. It tells the story of three people who have made choices for what they thought was love. It is suspensful and disturbing. Thanks so much for including me. I will journal again when I have mailed it off.

This book has arrived safe and sound in Maine, another snowy and at the moment bitter cold place! Interestingly, I mailed a book today, another ring, off to Spoiledrotten who sent this one to me. Ah, the close knit world of bookcrossers! I have two books to read now before I reach this one but should finish it in mid February!

Journal Entry 9 by wingMmeClintonwing from South Berwick, Maine USA on Saturday, February 27, 2010
I enjoyed this book more and more as it went along. It is quite different from any novels I have read in the past couple of years, and it strikes me as very well balanced and believable (other than the big coincidence....no spoiler here). Towards the end of the book is this paragraph that might serve as the heart of the story: "It was just a story of how bitter cold gets into your bones and never leaves you, of how the memories get into your heart and never leave you alone, of the pain and the bitterness of what happens to you when you're small and have no defenses but still know evil when it happens, of secrets about evil you have no one to tell, of the life you live in secret, knowing your own pain and the pain of others but helpless to do anything other than the things you do, and the end it all comes to." And yet it is a tender book that leaves hope at the end. I am very happy to have been part of this bookring, and this morning I will send it along to collectorkerri, next on the list!

Harrowing is the most appropriate word I could come up with to describe this story. At first you think Catherine is, at worst, a liar, but then it gets so much more sinister. A gripping story that burrowed into my brain and will be there for a long time to come.

Sent on to ladybug74 this afternoon.

I received this in the mail earlier this week. Sorry it took me a few days to get it journaled. I have been packing and rushing things at work getting ready for a trip out of town. The good news is that I will be taking this book with me and should have it read by the time I return home at the end of the week.

Journal Entry 14 by ladybug74 from Dothan, Alabama USA on Wednesday, April 28, 2010
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely try others by the same author. We know from the beginning that Catherine had a secret past, but when her "big" secret was revealed, I was totally not expecting it. All of the characters had secrets and very little of it was predictable. This book kept me interested from beginning to end. I did not start it right away like I had planned to, but could not put it down once I finally started reading it. I'm sending a PM to the next reader now to request a mailing address. Thanks for including me!

I finished this one up last night. Once I got the hang of prose used, the reading became easier. Not something I usually read, but enjoyable none the less. It was full of believable twist, although I had the last few paragraphs figured out about halfway through the book. We'll send off this week. Thanks for sharing and sorry it took me so long to get to this one.

Journal Entry 26 by valpete at Walnut Creek, California USA on Friday, November 5, 2010
Although this book received many bad reviews on Amazon, I thought this was a great read and suspenseful to the very end. The characters and their development were great. There is something both dark and likeable about all of them. Very well written. It is a facinating story about the choices people make.

The book was very dark, twisty and disturbing, but I was completely unable to put it down.

Karen07814 asked to be skipped, so it'll be traveling to The Netherlands in the next few days.

Finally got here safely today (don't know what went wrong the first time..) I was quite surprised to receive a package, since the postmen were having a strike (again). And it also contained a wishlist book, thank you so much valpete!! This sounds like an interesting read, looking forward to it :) (I do have a couple rings/rays in front though). Thanks for sharing the book perryfran!

I actually finished reading this some days ago.. the setting was quite fitting because we had a lot of snow here too :). I didn't like any of the characters, but it was an interesting read, and darker than I had expected.. some of the twists I saw coming, and some I didn't. It was one of those books that when you pick it up, you just keep reading. But if you put it down (for a while), you don't really have the urge to pick it up again.. (or maybe that's just me :p)

I had already contacted Jonniboi, so the book will travel on sometime soon.

I'm soooo sorry, but I haven't been able to get into this book, I don't know why, maybe it was because I have finished a really good book, and was looking for something similar, but after reading a few chapters I realsied this isn't the book for me, thank you anyway for including me!

K1nS has not replied to my PM I sent back in January, I shall try again, if I get no reply by next week I'll try the next person in line!
