Sent to the first person of the bookring. Hope you enjoy it!
Couldn't believe this has arrived already. Reading another bookring book just now, but this'll be next.
I'm afraid I wasn't hugely excited by this either. It was not at all what I expected and I can't enjoy a book where I need to sit with a gangster slang dictionary to work out what they were saying. I had given up trying to work it out by the end of the book and just went with the general gist. It did improve after part one (the book was divided into four parts) but I was glad when I finished it.
Just watched the film and I quite enjoyed it. It was certainly better than the book, the gangster slang having been toned down, but I'm not sure I'm any less confused with the story.

I loved this book and almost devoured it it one sitting (while waiting in for a delivery that never came). I loved the plot line, the twists and all of teh unexpected developments all of which had me guessing right until the very end and I was still wrong.
I found this very well written and all of the characters rounded and well though out. I now find myself really wanting to watch the film so will keep my eyes open for it on TV. Thanks for sharing such a great book Lucy and sorry for having it so long over the holiday period. I'll get it posted along as soon as I can xx

It's arrived safely - thanks for sending on to me Sarah.
Got a couple of books before this Lucy - but shouldn't take too long to get to it!
Looking forward to reading this one a lot!!
I have had this on (various) reading wishlists for absolutely ages, when I first heard about the macabre discovery of Elizabeth Short's (aka 'The Black Dahlia') mutilated body from back in the 1940's. Well... when I started this I thought that it was slow going. The only downside of the book - there were times when I got slightly flummoxed at various police references and some 'americanisms' but still got the general gist. I haven't read a book of this genre for ages, and it made me realise that I quite miss them! I have enjoyed this a lot, and thought that Ellroy has made a fantastic fictional acount of this true life crime. I felt it took a little time in building up to it, however, the investigation was interesting and comprehensive with several nailbiting twists that I never saw coming. I also found the information at the end of the book on Ellroy and his own personal inspiration with his writing of this novel fascinating.
Overall a great book, thoroughly recommended.
Thanks again Lucy for another great bookray. I will be sending on to kingfan30 within the next couple of days. :)

Book has arrived safe and well, thanks for sending it Jo and hop you have fully recovered from the gardening!! Will get to this as soon as I can, thanks for sharing.
25 April 10 - I have mixed feelings about this book. It was slow to get going. The background of the Lee and Bucky was a bit too detailed for my liking, when I reed a crime novel I like to get straight in within the first few chapters, not 86 pages in. There were parts of this book that were fast passed and I did not want to put it down, but there were also parts that were dragging and an effort to pick the book up. There were lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing till the end, just when I thought I had worked it out, something else would crop up to through it all out. Would be quite interested to see the film so see what that is like.
I will pop this in the post on Monday.

Finally! I have finished reading the book. Sorry for keeping this book so long.
Like some of the readers above me already have said. The book starts out a bit slow, but in the end you get really hooked and just want to know how it will end and how everything will come together.
Dutch-book already has a copy of the book so I asked Gwenindil for the address.
Update 9/26:
Gwenindil asked to be skipped. Since I can't find the user Mrainita I sent a PM to Simson-Shilitoe for their address.

Finished most of this book in the afternoon (today is a public holiday here: All Saints' Day/Allerheiligen). I really enjoyed this neo-noir crime novel.
It was a very good read with a slow start (chapter 1 - 6) because of the difficult language and unknown/strange words, which I did not find in the dictionary. And I am with “kingfan30” that the background of Lee Blanchard and Bucky Bleichert was a bit too detailed and long.
The rest of the story was well written and the plot/characters developed in different unexpected parts and twists. It was interesting to see how everything/the investigation comes together in the end, which made me thinking of similar parts of Peter Falk`s famous “Lt. Columbo”.
Thanks again for sharing this great book.
Will now be followed by "August is a wicked month". I am going to start with this book tomorrow.
Posting to Miss-Owl (Thailand) as soon as I get an address.

Another great Ellroy book.
I didn’t feel the story started slow it’s just the author’s way of getting the reader to get real close to the main character and the way he feels about things that surround him.
The plot is very tight and with so many twists and turns that the reader gets a bit dizzy but not lost, the characters are really strong and well built and the pace of the story is frantic. I loved the language and felt transported to that seedy L.A. of the late forties where no one is innocent and most were quite far from it. The dialogues and the expressions used by most characters really give the story an added reality feel.
The Black Dahlia changes everyone’s lives even without most characters knowing her, the way her death becomes an obsession for Bucky and Lee leads to an unstoppable downward spiral which is as obvious as unpredictable to the reader and that adds excitement to the read.
I truly enjoyed this book and recommend the whole L.A. Quartet series by this author, the last of the series, White Jazz, is a harder book to get into but just perfect.
The afterword was also very interesting to read, even though the author would later change is opinion about the movie (he wrote the afterword after viewing the uncut version of the film which ran almost 3 hours long).
I’ll keep it travelling soon.
