I love Ian McEwan, and the majority of his novels I think are ace. Black Dogs was no exception. I think I might already have a copy of this at my parents house, but I spotted this in a charity shop and really fancied reading it that day, so snapped it up. I really enjoyed it, and it's definitely deserving of a place on the 1001 book list.

Sending to Caroley.

Received today thanks.

Thank you for spotting this was on my wish list Lucy. I've been enjoying McEwan's books and have been wanting to read this one for a while.

I was just going to read a couple of chapters of this before starting some chores this morning. I should have known better really, shouldn't I? I've just finished it, having read it straight through.

Needless to say, I loved it! There's just something about McEwan's writing that draws you in. The characters are so real, so full of life.

Thanks again for sending it to me Lucy. I'm going to donate it to the 1001-library now as the library definitely needs more McEwan.

Great, I do so like McEwan! Thanks again for posting this.

A good McEwan book, I thought it was "quiet", at time disquieting. The titular dogs are indeed menacing.

This book arrived safely in my mailbox today. From the blurp on the back cover it indeed looks interesting to read. It has to wait a while though, because I have some rings that need to be read in order to go to their next reader.

I finished this book and I must say, that I do not really understand this book.
Okay, a man interviews his wife's parents and tries to find out what it was that kept them together, although they were living apart (in seperate countries even) for many years of their marriage.

I did not get the 'explanation' that was given of the title of this book, what it had to do with the rest of its contents. The reason why this was chosen to be the title / the center of the book.

Depsite all that it was a nice (quick) read. Interesting to read about the mindset of the two old people, how they reasoned when they were young before WW II, what the world was like then.

Thank you & happy reading with this 'long'-wished-for-book!

This book is one out of the 1001-library. When you've read it, would you please donate it back to the 1001-library? Later, when someone asks for it / you find a new reader, it will continue its travel under that label again.

Many thanks Totje2. I'm looking forward to this as I love Ian McEwan's novels.

The blurb reads:

"In 1946, a young couple set off on their honeymoon. Fired by their ideals and passion for one another, they plan an idyllic holiday, only to encounter an experience of darkness so terrifying it alters their lives for ever".

This is classic Ian McEwan: a macabre and disturbing event that changes the characters' life courses; a microscopic analysis of a marriage and the rifts within it; a meta-novel narrated by the writer. As such it is reminiscent of The Child in Time, Enduring Love, Atonement, The Innocent...

This time, the theme that runs through the book is the extremes of 20th century European politics: the polarisation of Fascism and Communism, and of rationalism and spiritualism, extremism being the Black Dogs that menace Europe to this day.

As ever, McEwan gets deep and credibly into his characters' heads and writes with a fluency and style that pulled me through the book in flash.
