Guyan, a Marcher Lord marries Judith of Ravenstow at the order of King William Rufus. They meet on their wedding day, and Guyan finds himself with a not fully matured 16 year old wife. Judith is skittish around her new husband as her now dead father was extremely abusive to both her and her mother. Not everyone is happy with the union, as some would prefer Judith married elsewhere and Guyan must guard his back against attempts on his life. As Guyan and Judith struggle with the treachery and intrigues of the courts of both William Rufus and his brother Henry, they manage to forge a strong and passionate marriage, and Judith grows into a strong willed woman and a force to be reckoned with.

This is the read for the historical fiction book club in November. As such I'm sending it off on a Ring for a while so that people can read it. I'm interested in reading this version of the book though to see how it compares to the newer edited editon so I'm keeping this as Ring!

No-one else was interested and I won't have time to read this version for ages. I really enjoyed the newer version and am now very unsure about whether to read this version. Arrived safely this morning. Thank you. Have a bit of reading to finish before starting this, but will get to it as soon as I can.

I did enjoy the developing relationship between Judith and Guyon as it seemed very realistic. I could see how the could genuinely grow to love one another.

When they went to Court there was more 'politics' introduced but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of detail/facts about what was going on in the country then. There was only a superficial mention of the possible murder of King Rufus and Henry taking over.

I think it is just a personal opinion as I do prefer historical novels that are based on real life people from history and the events that they were involved in. That said, I did enjoy reading the book and would not be put off reading any of her other books.
