7 out of 10

This is the first book I have read by Iain Banks. Wow, it was odd, but very clever. Mixed opinions from our book group when we read it, so what does anyone here think of it? (Different cover to picture featured here.)

Sending out as a Book Ray, as usual please journal when you receive and when you send the book. Try not to keep it for too long, others are waiting.
Shipping order as follows:-

mafarrimond in UK
faerie-glen in Germany
sherlockfan in New Zealand currently here

Still open if anyone else would like to be added.

This was also my first book that I have read by Iain Banks. It was very strange with an incredible twist but I loved it.

Faerie-glen has asked me to skip her from the book ring. Pm sent to sherlockfan for address.

Arrived in Upper Hutt yesterday. Thanks to IWISHIWAS for setting this book free, and to mafarrimond for sending it on to me.
Once I have read it, maybe not just yet as there are others on my urgent Mt TBR, I'll put a message on BCNZ Yahoo to see if anyone here in NZ would like to be added to the BookRay.

Well that was an unusual and strange book. Very nicely written though with some great phrases and sentences.
Even though I found some of the incidents macabre as well as unpleasant I had to keep reading. I didn't pick up the clues that would have made things a little clearer at the end. This second reading of one on the "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" was much more enjoyable for me even if enjoyable isn't quite the right word to describe this book.

Now the local "silly season" is almost over I'll put a message on our Yahoo sites to see if I can drum up enthusiasm to continue the ring. For that reason I'll add a short tempting extract.

"Enter-if you can bear it-the extraordinary private world of Frank, just sixteen, and unconventional, to say the least.

"Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different and more fundamental reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through."

I am going to send this book to L1nda as this is her month to receive books through the Southern Cross Book Exchange. I had nothing that she had on her wish list but after reading the list showing what she has read recently I get the impression that she just might like this.
Do hope so, but, L1nda, if you don't please don't be surprised as I found it rather a tricky book. Tricky but clever I think would describe it.
