Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America
1 journaler for this copy...
Determined to find out how anyone could make ends meet on $7 an hour, Ehrenreich left behind her middle class life as a journalist, moved to a new city and try looking for a job and a place to stay. She became a waitress, a cleaning woman, a nursing home aide and a Wal-Mart associate, and learned the stories of the people stuck in these low-income jobs, in real life with no exit as she has.
This book is especially relevant in this downturn of economy, where jobs are harder to come by, and full-time jobs may become part-time or no job. As the author suggests, this group of service helpers largely existed below the radar of average citizen, so it's sort of an eye-opener to see how they are treated with little respect. It's also a surprise to learn that cleaning companies only provide the illusion of clean rather than the actual cleaning.
I will be bringing this to the Kansas City UnCon.
