This simple Penguin paperback (with a preface by the author) presents the ghost stories of the Cambridge professor Montague Rhodes James. In M. R. James' sedately-paced stories, ancient evil often emerges from the benign settings of library and village church. The classic "'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'" is one of the finest of all English ghost stories.
