From back cover...

Looking back, it seemed like paradise: lives filled with the blessings of friendship, marriage, children and career. For twenty years, four friends--Chris, Barbara, Susan and Vicki--shared everything and faced the challenges of life and love head-on. Now, one sits alone to ponder the strange twists of fate and circumstance. Now, she must sit through the past to discover exactly what went wrong, how dreams turned to nightmares as friendships faded and lives were destroyed.....

This was a great book. I read it awhile ago so I don't remember word for word, but I do remember being glued to the pages until the end.

Will be traded or released.

I have decided to make this an international bookray if there are enough interested people.

Journal Entry 3 by SenoraG from Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, July 14, 2003
Now an international bookray! Rules of the Bookray...

1. Please journal when you receive the book and again when you are finished, with your thoughts.
2. Please read the book in a reasonable amount of time so it moves along at a nice pace. (30 days sound good?)
3. PM the person next on the list for their address. If they don't respond within three days, go to the next person.
4. Anyone joining after the book is mailed can still be added but MUST be willing to ship anywhere. Here is where it will
get topsy turvy...lol. i would like to keep the ray going as long as possible. But if it ends, the last person can do whatever they wish with the book.
5. Enjoy

Journal Entry 7 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, August 20, 2003
This was actually a quick read, once you get started it propells you along! About friendships, it's bonds and the lengths you go to for your mates...in this case, somewhat puzzling justifications for actions (trying not to spoil it for people who haven't read it yet).
The portrayal of domestic violence, and they way in which women seem to justify and find blame in themselves for this abuse, was well done.

Have sent off to Italy today for the next leg of this book's travels...

Journal Entry 10 by beckys on Saturday, September 6, 2003
A nice reading, even if there are too many topics and too many possibilities of appear a big mixture of things. My favourite character is Vicky...so direct, so straight in her speech, so fond of her work and her power.

It will leave Italy on Monday. Happy reading!

The book has arrived today - thanks so much !! I'll try to get it read quickly ...

Journal Entry 12 by tho on Thursday, September 18, 2003
Although I wasn't expecting it, this was a very quick read .... once you start reading it, you just can't stop :-) The story is quite dramatic, especially towards the end, which disappointed me a bit and didn't quite felt right to me. But still it's an enjoyable read about the friendship between these four women and the different options they take during the course of their lives.
My favourite character was Chris, who at first is the victim of such brutal violence but in the end makes the right decisions and manages to find happiness, if only for a little time.

Arrive today with a bunch of other bookrays. Why,oh why did I go mad and join every ray and ring in sight. It is all coming home [literally] now!

Journal Entry 14 by talkland from Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom on Thursday, October 16, 2003
This was one of those book one whizzes through. The women's friendship, its ups and downs with life changes and drama was told with great warmth. I do agree the ending of the book lack polish but on the whole a great read. My favourite character was Chris, but all the ladies had their good and bad points. I also liked the fact that it didn't end all hunky-dory and neat because life isn't like that!

The book arrived two days ago. I'll read it as soon as possible.

It was a little hard to get into the book but then it turned out to be quite fascinating. The four ladies were a little bit too extreme types for me, but then extreme types exist too. But could four of them get to be friends? And I rather doubt if an abusing husband could be a good father. Well, maybe he could manipulate his children to think so, or could he?
I loved the fact that one of the younger generation did not choose any academic career but married a cowboy instead. It happens in real life quite often. I know at least three young women who did the same here in Finland: married a farmer with lots of horses. One of them even left medical school (it is very difficult to get into one) after three years of studies. She wanted to teach riding instead of being a doctor of medicin. I hope she happy now.
I sent the book to next in ring lisabb2 a couple of days ago. Good reading lisabb2!

I really loved this book! I flew through it in 2 days. You really got wrapped up in the womens lives with all the ups and downs. There is something there to touch everyone. I agree with talkland that it is nice to read a book where the author doesnt feel like there has to be a fairy tale ending. I will look for this author again. Thanks so much for letting me read this!

This just arrived in the mail, perfect timing as I just finished another book while walking the dog this morning.
A friend was just telling me last night that she had really enjoyed this book.

A fast, enjoyable read. This is the second of Joy Fielding's that I've read. I find her women are strong (for the most part) characters while most of the men are abusive, cheating, weak or just plain mean. I know there are a lot of guys like that out there, but there are also strong, caring, decent men around. I'm lucky The Beard is one. My favourite character is Ariel, Susan's rebellious, independent, oldest daughter - very annoying and nasty at first, but then....(I won't give it away). Doesn't she remind you of a lot of teenage girls?
Luckaye has asked me to pass her by, so this will be with Canada Post tomorrow on its way to spaceystacey.

Just a little note to say that I'm able to start this book tonight (the second I finish writing this, in fact!).

Journal Entry 28 by jenvince from Scottsdale, Arizona USA on Tuesday, September 14, 2004
I finished this last night. Everyone was right - though it is a hefty size, this is a quick read.

I thought the story had several twists and I liked that. But like another reader said, a lot of different topics were covered. Overall, I liked it.

Thank you for sharing! It's on the way to indymomto2 today.

Journal Entry 29 by indymomto2 from Indianapolis, Indiana USA on Tuesday, September 21, 2004
I too found this to be a quick read. The story was compelling and being set in Cincinnati made it fun for me since Indianapolis is not that far away and I’m a bit familiar with the area. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were so different and still remained friends. I did find myself questioning if I would have over looked the abuse of a friend, but I looking back over the timeframe of the story and the area I can see where this would have happened, and unfortunately still does. I also found the whole court experience to be strangely believable and a bit upsetting. I was disappointed with the ending I thought it was flat and didn’t flow with the rest of the story. It seemed abrupt to me.

I think I’ll add this to llama-mama205’s ABBC #2 book box.
