A birthday gift from my youngest daughter.

A gripping novel full of tension throughout. With just his third novel Paul Torday has now established himself as one of my favourite authors. I am particularly impressed by his range as this is so different from the amusing 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' and the rather grim 'The Irresistable Inheritance of Wilberforce'.

Received this in the post from Ardachy! Thank you. What a lovely surprise!

I've started it already as I'd just finished a book and am enjoying what I've read so far. The plot sounds intriguing and I like the main characters.

I really enjoyed this cleverly-written book. It is a dark story that benefits from being told by the two main characters, each giving their slant to the unfolding events. The description of the dark woods and towering mountains around the estate in Perthshire all add to the sense of menace that develops later in the story.

This book made me think about what is 'normal' regarding mental illness - could Michael's internal reality be real to him at least, and not a ploy to hide his illness as suggested by his doctor. I was also intrigued by the idea (new to me) that schizophrenia is, as some believe, a kind of evolutionary glitch. If this genetic anomaly causes the brain to regress to its hunter-gatherer state, is it a mental illness that needs to be treated? Or are we as society only changing the brain activity - by chemicals- to make it fit our idea of normality in evolved man?

An excellent book.

Thankd again, Ardachy.

Found by Loch Morlich on the 27th April after a day in the Cairngorms.

Enjoyed the book, especially pleased when the storyline took him to North Berwick and the Marine Hotel. I was born & brought up in the town & my Mum now lives along the road from the hotel! Knew all the places mentioned.

Hoping to release the book next time I'm down there.
