Journal Entry 1 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Friday, October 02, 2009
I bought this book off a library sale shelf several years ago and held onto it, waiting to read & release it at just the right moment, at just the right time. It's 160 pages of amazingly touching stories about people to whom AIDS Quilt patches were created for the NAMES project. I knew going in that it would be an emotional ride but I still only made it to page 21 before totally breaking down in tears. Then, a couple pages later, one of the stories made me laugh out loud. I wasn't expecting such an amazing roller coaster. There were patches that were eerie, touching, sad, uplifting, funny, beautiful-- everything you could imagine. There was such an amazing variety as well. Even having seen many of these patches up close at various events and AIDS Walks in person I was unprepared for the power they would have in a book. I was moved beyond words, time after time. I was planning on listing the ones that got to me the most, but that list would be about a hundred long! Seriously, it was really eye-opening, all the relationships people had to those who had created the patches. There's family and friends and coworkers and daughters and parents and lovers and wives and husbands and hospital roommates and hospital nurses and fans and artists and SO much more. Every piece is so personal and so beautiful.
