I was assigned to read the first story in this book, Behind a Mask. After finishing it, I quit school to finish the rest of the book! (Well, I quit because I'm sick of putting aside what I want to read for what I'm assigned...I'll go back later :) Anyway, I really enjoyed each of these stories. The first one was one of those stories that keeps you guessing until the very end. It's not very often that I come across a story that I haven't already figured out half way into it. The second story was not quite as good as the first and the ending was...odd and unexpected. The third story had an unexpected ending: although I pretty much had it figured out, I was wrong about who "did it". The fourth story was a great one with a happy ending.

I will keep this in my permanent collection as I'm sure I'll want to revisit it again and again!

I finally managed to finish this one. I must say I really liked it; I never read anything by L.M. Alcott, but probably this isn't the genre she is most known for. However, all the stories are great. I can't chose a favorite, they all captivated me for different reasons.

Thanks for sharing, elizardbreath. I already posted this along, it's on its way to the UK right now.

The writing was somewhat old-fashioned - not unsurprisingly, but once I got used to the style, I really enjoyed it. My favourite was Pauline and Punishment. A diiferent, Louisa May Alcott to the one I knew and loved but just as entertaining.

The book has arrived safely last week with 3 other rays.

At the moment I am reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, a bookring from "Kimmi". I hope to start with "Behind a Mask" soon.

Thank you "elizardbreath" for sharing.

Journal Entry 13 by Simson-Shilitoe at Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg, Alsace France on Sunday, August 15, 2010
Finished this book today.

It was a good read. My favourite story was "The Mysterious Key". My favourite character was Jane Muir ("A Woman`s Power").

Louisa May Alcott was a very talented author. This collection is proof of that. The stories may have been thrillers in their day, and indeed are inhabited with ghosts, revenge minded cast-off lovers and forbidden matches, but they are entertaining nonetheless, admirably represent their genres and are good mysteries.

I have already "Icilas" address. I will post the book to France on Monday.

I am really sorry for delaying the book's journey. Thanks for all your patience.

I have always loved Alcott's stories and her use of language. These four stories were little different from "Little Women" and others, but I liked them anyway. My favorite story was the first one, Behind the Mask, maybe because of Jean Muir's character. Third and fourth stories were also nice, but I didn't understand the second one. It just ended so weird. But anyway, the book wasn't a disappointment, stories were quite match for my personal taste.

I got already NMReader's address and will mail it to her. Many thanks to elizardbreath for this book ring!

It arrived yesterday. I am looking forward to reading.

Journal Entry 22 by NMReader at Herndon, Virginia USA on Tuesday, April 5, 2011
I thought a status update might be appreciated.

This book will not be primary read for a bit but I am reading it when I can. So far I have finished the Introduction.

April 12: I am about 20 pages from completing the second story - Pauline's Passion and Punishment. This will put me slightly more than half way through the book.

Journal Entry 23 by NMReader at Herndon, Virginia USA on Monday, April 18, 2011
I quite enjoyed this book. I previously had read the last story in the book but even enjoyed re-reading it.

It is definitely a bit of a different world then the world inhabited by her Little Women and Little Men but there were allusions to this world in the writings that Jo does for fun and later profit.

Thanks for including me.
