I enjoyed this novel about a family slowly disintegrating. It was, at the same time, funny and touching and unbearably sad.
Gerald and Vicki Woodlore are parents to Kyle who has just come back from Afghanistan for reasons that are not disclosed but that are potentially worrisome. He's been sent back ahead of schedule but "physically sound".
Upon arriving home, Kyle retreats to his room and stays there. His parents can't decide whether they should roust him out of there or let him be.
The story is told from each family member's perspective. Each of them lives in his or her own world, with the other family members, if noticed at all, more irritants than supports. As I was reading I couldn't help but silently cry out to each of them, "Oh my goodness. This is your family; you love each other; do something; get out of that bubble you've created around yourself."
Despite the fact that each of the characters seemed to be more concerned about what was going on in their individual little worlds, which for each of them were becoming more unpleasant by the minute, I could not help but like these people. I knew that inside there was a real caring human being - who needed to wake up and smell the coffee.
Well written and very readable.
