Journal Entry 1 by Oldgirl58 from Chermside, Queensland Australia on Saturday, September 26, 2009
From back cover: In October 1975, during the decolonisation of Portuguese Timor, five young television reporters travelled from Australia to report on the brewing unrest in the region. It was a journey that would be their last: Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham, and Tony Stewart of Channel Seven, and Brian Peters and Malcolm Rennie of Channel Nine, were killed by the Indonesian military as they filmed the infantry troops advancing into the border town of Bailbo, in the months that followed, a sixth man who went to investigate their fate, freelance journalist Roger East, was also executed.

Fantastic read. It was amazing how much came to mind as I read the book. Hopefully one day justice will be done for all six men and their families.

Journal Entry 6 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, October 26, 2009
This book arrived here either Saturday or Sunday but as there was a public holiday - Labour Day - and thus a long weekend I could only dream about the small yellow card in our box and wait until today to collect the parcel. Thanks Bookword76 for sending it to me. I should tell you that the packaging nearly defeated either your postal staff or ours but did just make it through with a very tattered outer but the two books inside were fine.

Journal Entry 7 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Sunday, January 10, 2010
I am so thorougly ashamed of myself for taking so long to read and forward this book. Sincere apologies to all concerned. It became completely buried in my quite disorganised house old - no sensible excuse I know. As the story of Balibo has hit the headlines once again and spurred me to seek and find, then read. I was truly appalled by the whole sorry tale which doesn't put the then Australian Government in at all a good light. While sometimes the probing actions of journalists, especially at the time of small personal tragedies, infuriates me, I do acknowledge that they are essential to try to keep Governments and officials under constant scrutiny. This is a sad but perfect example of the extent to which journos risk their lives to tell it like it is.

Journal Entry 10 by LadyIndigo from Orange, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, March 10, 2010
sorry to hold this up a little - i finished the book a couple of weeks ago and have now received foxy's mailing addy.. i was young when this happened but i clearly remember shirley shackelton's yearly 'appearances' - that she continued to bring this matter to the notice of people demonstrates her persistance and the government's continued silence i was really shocked to learn of the political coverups that happened in 1975 and have continued to happen; i admire jolliffe's search for the truth despite the silence and the closed doors - the censored archives material the sydney inquest is a big step forward and sadly many of the parents are no longer alive to see the start of the justice the balibo boys deserve as sherlockfan writes "While sometimes the probing actions of journalists, especially at the time of small personal tragedies, infuriates me, I do acknowledge that they are essential to try to keep Governments and officials under constant scrutiny. This is a sad but perfect example of the extent to which journos risk their lives to tell it like it is. " it is sad that many journalists are killed in course of their work - not just accidently 'in the wrong place', but deliberately murdered - i went to a conference a couple of years ago where a speaker talked about this- i'll edit this to include the actual number thanx bookworm for sharing this timely story :)

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES: Sending along to the next person today (sorry for the delay). This was a really interesting read, but as with some other non-fiction books I have read which had a lot of facts/detail, I found it a bit hard to read big sections at a time (I needed some time to digest the information first). Very interesting though. thanks!

I saw the movie last year - incredibly moving - and have been to a book talk by another journalist who had been in Timor at the time. It is an important event in our history, so am keen to read the book. Thanks bookworm76 for starting the ring and foxygirlACT for posting to me.
