between 1785 and 1812 a midwife andhealer mnamed Martha Ballard kept a diary that recorded her arduous work as well as her domestic life in Hallowell, Maine.

Thie book won the Bancroft Prize and the Joan Kelly and John H. Dunning Prizes of the American Historical Association.

I learned so much about life in the United States shortly after the Revolutionary War was won. It was a slow read but so full of interesting information. The author did a superior job researching to make the diary itself more understandable and informative.
