Journal Entry 1 by livrecache from Hobart, Tasmania Australia on Sunday, September 20, 2009
Bought for the Southern Cross Book Exchange, but I could resist reading it first before sending it on to crimson-tide. I've been reading Kate Atkinson's later work recently, which while I enjoy it, has actually become more traditional. This book, published in 2000, is very untraditional. I found it to be very, very clever. The reviewers describe it as humourous, which it is, (and in fact its subtitle is 'A Comic Novel') but for me that wasn't what made it interesting. I saw it more as playing with the boundaries of fiction writing - and yes, sending up some aspects of fiction writing. Maybe that's why the author subtitled it that. There's some wonderful wordplay in it, as well as quite a lot of farce and irony. I'll look forward to seeing/hearing what you think about it, as I think there is much to be said about it.

Fantastic! Thanks livrecache. I enjoy her books enormously so am looking forward to this one - even more so after reading your comments. And of course the only sensible thing to do was to read it first . . . ;-)
