In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury's classic, frightening vision of the future, firemen don't put out fires--they start them in order to burn books. Bradbury's vividly painted society holds up the appearance of happiness as the highest goal--a place where trivial information is good, and knowledge and ideas are bad. Fire Captain Beatty explains it this way, "Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs.... Don't give them slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy."

Guy Montag is a book-burning fireman undergoing a crisis of faith. His wife spends all day with her television "family", imploring Montag to work harder so that they can afford a fourth TV wall. Their dull, empty life sharply contrasts with that of his next-door neighbour Clarisse, a young girl thrilled by the ideas in books, and more interested in what she can see in the world around her than in the mindless chatter of the tube. When Clarisse disappears mysteriously, Montag is moved to make some changes, and starts hiding books in his home. Eventually, his wife turns him in, and he must answer the call to burn his secret cache of books. After fleeing to avoid arrest, Montag winds up joining an outlaw band of scholars who keep the contents of books in their heads, waiting for the time society will once again need the wisdom of literature.

Ich habe das Buch auch im Englisch-Unterricht durchgenommen, aber nur in Auszügen, und da finde ich die Schul-Ausgabe mit Vokabeln ganz besonders praktisch =)

This is a great book.
I knew a big part of the content, because I worked with it in school, but I never got to read it.
Now I finally had the time
I think, the problems the book is talking about are a bit too obvious, but that's okay. If you read the book it's not (only) entertainment, it's as well critisism, which is hidden behind a good story, but still very evident.

I really liked reading it and I was happy to get some English exercise :) Thanks for the surprise, Hopf!

The book follows it's destiny and travels to SKRaven. Not as a surprise, but to fulfil a wish.

Habs mir gestern Abend aus der Packstation gefischt und gerade erst ausgepackt. Leider ist es in englisch und wird daher nicht von meiner Wunschliste runtergenommen, sonderen direkt weitergegeben, sonst wird es noch Jahrzehnte ungelesen her stehen.

Das Buch kommt heute mit zum Kölner August-MeetUp.

Ich war mir ja erst sicher, dass ich das Buch schonmal gelesen habe, aber weil ich mich so gar nicht an den Plot erinnern konnte habe ich es doch eingesteckt. Nach einigen Minuten Anlesen habe ich festgestellt, dass ich es verwechselt habe und das Buch kenne ich tatsaechlich noch nicht. Ich wollte es nur immer mal gelesen haben - super! :)

Ich wollte das Buch wirklich moegen - vielleicht wollte ich das auch ein bisschen zu sehr. Bin ein grosser Fan von dystopischen Romanen, allen voran natuerlich 1984 und Brave New World, und darueber hinaus mag ich Buecher, in denen es irgendwie um Buecher geht. Trotzdem war Fahrenheit zwar gut lesbar, aber wird sicher nicht mein Favorit in diesem Genre. Im Grossen und Ganzen finde ich die Geschichte zu oberflaechlich erzaehlt, was natuerlich an der Duenne des Buches liegt. Das Ende hat mich auch etwas ratlos gelassen, es ist fuer eine Dystopie etwas untypisch, aber nichts halbes und nichts ganzes.

Als Befüllung für eine OBCZ

Dankeschoen Persephone fuer die Buchspende!!! Ueber das Buch habe ich mich wirklich sehr gefreut. Den Film kenne ich schon lange + war auf das Buch natuerlich gespannt. Hat man sich erst einmal in der gesellschaftskritischen Geschichte festgebissen, ist sie auch schon wieder zuende. Natuerlich atmet sie den Zeitgeist der 50er Jahre, doch hebt sie sich von damals ueberwiegenden Einheitsbrei deutlich ab, ist zeitlos, vielmehr ihrer Zeit weit voraus. Mein Fazit: sehr lesenswert

Neues Futter fuer das Buecherregal. Viel Spaß beim Lesen! Ueber deinen Eintrag, wie dir das Buch gefallen hat, wuerde ich mich freuen.
