'The French Riviera: home to the Beautiful People. And none are more beautiful than Cecile, a precocious seventeen-year-old, and her father Raymond, a vivacious libertine. Charming, decadent and irresponsible, the golden-skinned duo are dedicated to a life of free love, fast cars and hedonistic pleasures. But then, one long, hot summer Raymond decides to marry, and Cecile and her lover Cyril feel compelleds to take a hand in his amours, with tragic consequences.'

I loved this little book, although really short and light and easy to read and a great translation, it did deal with quite a heavy subject. The ending is shocking too, at least I didn't see it coming, but I felt it was brushed under the carpet too quickly and dealt with very lightly. I really liked that character of Cecile, she gave the impression of a very strong independent female but with a hugely likeable vulnerable side. Some of her decisions I did not agree with but I did have quite a lot of sympathy for her.

Now heading off on a 1001-Bookray. The usual rules apply and I hope everyone enjoys the book.

I enjoyed this novella - I liked the candid, contradictory nature of the character Cecile and the complex relationship she has with Anne. It reminded me a lot of novels by Simone De Beauvoir with more frivolity and less angst - maybe that's the Frenchness one of the reviews on the cover was talking about. Short but satisfying.

I posted the book on to Jujuks in Portugal today. It is going by airmail so shouldn't take too long to arrive.

I really enjoyed this book. Cecile is a very likeable character, her flaws making her more so. Although some of her decisions seemed wrong I did understand her intentions, as I think she was only trying to keep her freedom.

I'll send this book out to hakkalina on Monday.

Update: 2010.01.12.
To save the memory of this (beautiful) day...
I had to walk 40 minutes by the time I arrived at my office. The Local Transportation Company came out on strike today, so the buses and trams are not on the road. Many cars are on the streets which cause traffic jams in the city. I saw only one tram on my way along which was crowd with people. In the afternoon another long walking journey will wait for me...

It was quite a little well written read. I found the main caracter quite selfish and coudn't really sympathize with her and the end was a bit to sudden for me. The book deals mostly with how it let to te event and than doesn't show really how people deal with the event after it happened.

The book is on it's way to the next reader

Journal Entry 15 by kingfan30 from Somewhere in Lincs 🤷‍♂️, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 17, 2010
book has arrived safe and sound, I have had a few rings/rays turn up over the last week so will get to this as soon as I can. The cover seems very familiar, not sure if I have read it before but a long time ago, or if it is tucked away at the back of a cupboard somewhere!

16 April 10 - I enjoyed this book very much, and think I have read although quite some time ago and did not remember the story line at all. I felt if showed the emotions a daughter (or son for that matter) feels when a parent meets someone new and wants to bring them into the family permanently, although I did not agree with her actions, I could imagine that is exactly how a young girl would have thought it would help. Like other readers I also felt the ending seemed rushed. I have the address of the next person so will pop it in the post on Monday, thanks for sharing the book.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Found this book a very short but enjoyable read. In some ways a bit of a morality tale, but you do wonder whether Cecile, for all her sadness has grown as a result of her experiences. Won't say anymore as it may spoil the book for future readers.

Posted this on to the next reader as I already had her details from a previous ring. I hope you enjoy the book and happy onward travels. Thanks so much to Danielle for organising the ring and to Fluffy for her patience.

A quick and enjoyable read. The storyline was in the main predictable with a little twist to the ending.

Thanks for including me in this ray. This was a short quick read - perfect for a summer day. For some reason, I don't have a lot to say about it.

I am at the end of the ray and will pass this book on to another reader of the 1001 books this weekend at the Chicago Air & Water show. I will make sure it continues it's travels!

Journal Entry 27 by angela861 at Chicago, Illinois USA on Monday, August 16, 2010
ChiBoiler let me read this one today while we watched the Air & Water show. Very quick read. The only person I actually liked in the story was Cyril. He seemed to be the only one without a motive. I did like the tone and writing. I'll have to try something else by this author.

I left this book in ChiBoiler's possession. She will be passing it on to another BC member.
