"It's 1946. Juliet Ashton, a 32-year-old writer, has found a certain recognition through her light-hearted column for the Spectator which lifted the spirits of her readers during WW2, but she can't think what to write next. But then Dawsey Adams writes to her from Guernsey - by chance he's acquired a book Juliet once owned - and, emboldened by their mutual love of books, they begin a correspondence. Dawsey belongs to the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and as Juliet investigates the strange-named reading group, soon she stumbles upon a whole number of islanders eager to write and tell her of their experiences of the German occupation of Guernsey. Entranced by her new friends, Juliet decides to visit the island to meet them properly. A moving tale of friendship, tolerance and forgiveness in the wake of a period of unthinkable hardship and horror, this is set to become a classic."

What a lovely book! While reading the story there were several times where I thought what a perfect book this is for a site like bookcrossing, book to be shared with people who love to read. In the afterword (by Annie Barrows) I stumbled across this paragraph that just sums it up perfectly:

"This profusion of questions, exclamations, and tales is the new version of the Society. Its members are spread all over the world but they are joined by their love of books, of talking about books, and of their fellow readers. We are transformed -magically- into the literary society each time we pass a book along, each time we ask a question about it, each time we say, 'If you liked that, I bet you'd like this.' Whenever we are willing to be delighted and share our delight, as Mary Ann did, we are part of the ongoing story of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society."

Got a very polite (and very justified if I may say so) reminder from ApoloniaX.
Started with the book today.

.
.
.

There is no denying it, this is so lovely!
I have not read a book of letters for some time, and am really enjoying it. Ok, I needed till page 28 to realise that Dawsey is a man (also some other names are really unusual :) but now that I know it, I sincerely hope that they'll come together... And the letters are (in their writing style) probably not as diverse as the letters of so different people would be... but that doesn't matter at all! I'm rushing through this, what's next, what's next?

p.56: "Later, I came to see that Mr Dickens and Mr Wordsworth were thinking of men like me when they wrote their words."

p.102: "Have you ever noticed that when your mind is awakened or drawn to someone new, that person's name suddenly pops up everywhere? My friend Sophie calls it coincidence, and Reverend Simpless calls it grace. He thinks that if one cares deeply about someone or something new one throws a kind of energy out into the world, and 'fruitfulness' is drawn in."

8.12. Starting with Part Two today.
p.205 "...a very big man in a dark coat with a fur collar..." see here e.g.

It is so very clever, I think, to tell the happy end not through a letter like the rest of the book but through Isolas observation notes.

9.12. I'm through,
and I'll now go directly to my amazon, and put several copies, in English and German into my shopping card. My friends need to be part of this Society!

Oh, such a lovely, touching book! I do like epistolary novels (Is that the right word for "letter novels"?) and this was was surely fluent one and kept me interested from the beginning 'till the end. It did remind me a bit of the "84 Charing Cross Road" probably because both were about correspondece and books, but not too much.
I loved the characters in this story, and even if it had some difficult, horrible things about war, all in all it made me feel good and warm. I too think that every book-lover should read this! :)

Sending this to U.K. next, on Monday when the post-office opens after the Christmas holidays.

Very enjoyable read with lots of interesting characters. The only one I felt was a little two dimensional was Mark. It always surprises me how much you can get to know about characters through the way they write (and what content they include in) a letter.
Would definitely recommend anyone to try this book - a good start to my new year reading, thankyou!
I have the next reader's address so will get this in the post as early as I can next week.

My rating for this book tends to go to very little. For me not good enough to rate with 5 starts, but not bad enough for 1 either. It looks like I'm caught somewhere in the middle I guess.

Just like I was caught by the fact that I did not like this book. From the reviews I had quite high expectations. But it seems that I do not like novels written in letter form at all (had difficulty with Griffin and Sabine too).
Added to that is the fact that there's one central person who writes letters to many different people and receives answers from al lot of them too. It made me very confused. And since I do not like to have to go back again and again to find out who's who (when Juliet writes more than one letter to a person and receives letters too, the addresses in the letters disappear it) I decided not to continue reading.

The writing itself was okay but could not keep my attention at a level that the form (and for a minor part the contents) did not matter so much anymore

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry! I thought I had read and sent this book on already!! Major oops!

First of all, I read this in nearly one gulp - loved every second of it and completely loved all of the characters. There's something about reading books about books that really does it for me. I guess I'm intensely nerdy like that ;) Also loved learning about the Channel Islands' role in the War - never knew anything about it so was very informative.

OK am messaging the next person in line ASAP and will send on post haste! Many many apologies once again!
