I've been wanting to read this book for a long time, but unfortunately I couldn't really get into the story. I got the idea, and I liked it, but the story itself...nope. Too bad!

The book was bought in a second hand bookstore in Canada, so it already made the trip over the big sea. I hope it will travel much and much more! Since 'Embers' is a 1001 book, I can probably make someone happy by sending this out.

Wow, what a great surprise this book was. I can't thank you enough franaloe and if I can return the favour please don't hesitate to ask.

I am slowly getting through some of the 1001 books and this is a most welcome addition and once I have read it I will offer it up as a Bookray to help itfind as many new readers as possible.

Oh, and I loved the fact that the book was wrapped in newspaper!! It entertained both myself and my boyfriend for a good hour, especially reading the reviews of 'Shallow Hal' and 'Bulletproof Monk'. A great touch! xx

This was a great atmospheric book that was quick and entertaining. I felt all the characters were believeable and really felt for The General at the end and the lack of love in his life. I did get annoyed with ther lack of answers and only implied information but it was a good read and thank you so much for sharing franaloe, I will offer this up as a bookray soon xx

Arrived today, many thanks Danielle23.

This was a very surreal encounter between two old friends after a long separation. Are the questions real, do they need to be answered, for whose benefit? This was a very unusual and singular insight into the deep and ponderous reflections of a man who believes himself betrayed. Konrad is enigmatic, the General seems satisfied, but do we ever learn the truth? This is a short book with great depth, which I really enjoyed, I‘m still thinking…

Nice, it was on my wishlist because it's on the 1001-list but also because I've heard from so many (reliable) people that they were just absolutely mesmerized by it.
So I just have to give it a try. Needless to say I'm 100 % crazily in love with the cover.
:)

What a great read, probably my best in 2012 !
And that without anything happening. That means one ... of a writer was at work.

Thank you, Bloedengel. I've heard a lot about this book as well and am pleased for the chance to read it.

Thank you for helping me celebrate my birthday!

(P.S. I love the cover, too :-)

Journal Entry 17 by wingeponine38wing at Winchester, Massachusetts USA on Saturday, August 31, 2013
Wow - this was amazing! Such beautiful language and deep insight into human motivations and relationships. And so much wisdom in a relatively short piece of writing. There were just so many passages I wanted to note, but I'd basically be copying out most of the book, so will let this go and look out for another copy to keep.

Interesting (and only slightly annoying!) that The General kept asking questions of Konrad and then not waiting for his answer, making the entire dinner meeting basically a monologue. I guess he'd been waiting 41 years to say it, so it's understandable in that way. Questions to which one really doesn't want an answer, especially after all that time.

Now I really wish I could read Hungarian, because if the translation's prose is this beautiful, I can only imagine how powerful it is in the original language.

Thank you so much for sending this, Bloedengel! [I had an earlier copy that I sent to another BCer unread. So glad I you gave me a second chance to read it!]
