The first in the Russell/Holmes series. From the back cover:

In 1915, long since retired from his observations of criminal humanity, Sherlock Holmes is engaged in a reclusive study of honeybee behavior on the Sussex Downs. Never did he think to meet an intellect to match his own--until his acquaintance with Mary Russell, a very modern fifteen-year-old whose mental acuity is equaled only by her audacity, tenacity, and penchant for trousers and cloth caps, unthinkable in any young lady of Holmes's own generation. Under Holmes's sardonic tutelage, Russell hones her talent for deduction, disguises, and danger...

I just loved it, and have read it about 5 times...and have lent it out several times. Sorry it is in such bad shape. The others are newer.

I have just re-re-read it and I guess it's about time to start a spiral.

I list my bookrings at The Bookring Directory!

No Rules, just manners: make JEs and release notes, don't keep the books too long (about a month), keep the next in line informed, etc.

8 out of 10

These books by Laurie R. King are really great. I like the characters a lot and the idea of a female sidekick to Sherlock Holmes is fantastic.
Can't wait to read the next one.

8 out of 10

One of the most enjoyable Holmes pastiches I have read for a while - despite the fact that Russell was a tiny bit annoying and whiny at times, and I hate when people make Watson out to be stupid...
Anyways, great story (once it got well and truly into it), got close with guessing whodunnit but was still nicely surprised.
Can't wait for the next one!

I finished reading this book. I did enjoy it though Russell drove me crazy sometimes, the way she acted. The story overall was pretty good though.

I have pm'd the next person on the list for their address.
