Synopsis
Kim Edwards's stunning family drama evokes the spirit of Sue Miller and Alice Sebold, articulating every mother's silent fear: what would happen if you lost your child and she grew up without you? In 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins, he immediately recognizes that one of them has Down Syndrome and makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and to keep her birth a secret. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is an astonishing tale of redemptive love. BACKCOVER: "Edwards is a born novelist. . . . Rich with psychological detail and the nuances of human connection."

I enjoyed this book, even tho I don't believe it lives up to the hype... However, it was an interesting concept (giving away a twin at birth and following the two lives), and I liked how the author juxtaposed the two "families"...that of David Henry and his family vs. Caroline Gill... I didn't exactly want the book to end the way that it did, but I think it was more realistic than wrapping things up neatly. The concept of this book is pretty simple, but its the complexities of the lies that result from a solitary act that make it so engaging. It's quite a sad book, very moving, as we follow the two very different twins throughout the lives, to a shocking twist in the tale towards the end, and then all the loose ends are tied up. The author manages to keep the chapters going, and I never found it boring at all. The twist in the tale, although clever, led to quite a disappointing ending I felt, which is the only real quibble I felt with the book. It's been quite successful, I just hope the author manages to follow it up now.

Thank you thank you thank you! This came in the mail yesterday. God or someone must really want me to read this book. I happened to pick up a copy for myself about three weeks ago; then, shortly after I finished reading it, I received a surprise copy in the mail. This is the third copy in about as many weeks that I have received. Now I just have to figure out why it is so important that I read this book. And if another copy shows up in my life in the next week, I will know that something is pushing me towards this book. Thanks for thinking of me and I do appreciate the gift.
I truly enjoyed this book, and though it is a sad story, it has some happiness to it too. I kind of felt the twist coming, or something like it, but the results of the twist were not quite as I expected. I liked following the lives of the two families and that the family of the daughter was the happier of the two.
Thanks again.

I didn't absolutely love this book, but I did find it moving. I got a little stuck in the middle, I struggled to read more than a few pages at a time. I persisted and ended up so engrossed I read the last half in one sitting, crying my way through most of it!
I plan to take this book to meetup next month and pass it on there.
