From the back cover:

Clanton, Mississippi. The life of a ten-year-old girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime. Until her black father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own outraged hands.

For ten days, as burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spread through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life ... and then his own ....

I previously read another copy of this book in Sept. 2008 and here are the comments I had at that time:

Based on the back cover description I probably would not have chosen this book off the shelf as one that I wanted to read. I chose this book based primarily on the reputation of the author, John Grisham, who has become one of my favorites. The thing that I like the most is the straight forward and to the point style of writing. I don't feel that I have to look between the lines for meaning or that there are things hidden in the text that I need to decipher in order to get the full meaning of the story.

The elements of this story are painful. A young girl is traumatized in the opening chapter and we are never to forget that as the book progresses. Much like she and her family will never forget what happened to her at the hands of two very bad men. The question becomes will her tormentors get what they deserve and then did they get what they deserve?

There were a few things in the story that dragged on and a few parts of the story that seemed rushed so that ends could be ties up quickly but overall I really liked this book. I was relieved that the verdict is given at the end and that it is not left up to the reader to decide what should have happened or what they would have done. In a way I think that the way the verdict was decided was most just and probably the way that a jury really works ... not just on fact but on feeling.

I hope that the finder of this book will enjoy it as I have and if you like this book I would highly recommend becoming a Grisham fan and reading more by this author.

This book will be travelling to the Kansas City UnConvention that is being held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas this weekend and was chosen because it fits one or more release challenges that I am participating in. This book may be snatched from the book buffet available in the hotel, be wild released from road trip to and from the event, or be distributed on our various excursions throughout the weekend. I will try and make release notes when I can but if a journal entry comes before that then I may edit this journal entry with release challenge information or details about where I released the book into the wild.

This was a banned book? Wow, I had no idea!

My alter-ego, ksreader, attended the BC in KC 2009 UnConvention and picked this book up to share at the OBCZ. Since the shelf has been emptied out, it is headed there now. Thanks!
