Journal Entry 3 by spy-there at Zürich, Zürich Switzerland on Monday, June 7, 2021
In the twelfth Disc World novel we meet Granny Weatherwax again, the formidable witch with the devastating stare who rarely needs to really use magic. Her friend Gytha Ogg is not less impressive. She is granny of countless grandchildren and the weighty matriarch of her expanded family. She also has a very lively relationship to fancy drinks with rum, to male company and of course to her one-eyed tomcat Greebo, a dreadful predator for everything small and furry or with wings. And there is young Magrat Garlick (a wet hen according to Granny) who takes Karate classes to find cosmic harmony and a stronger confidence in her self. Of which she has none at all, and it has a lot to do with her unusual name (that is to say, with her mother who spelled Margaret incorrectly).

Following the death of Desiderata Hollow, Magrat Garlick inherits not only her magic wand, but also Desiderata's responsibility as fairy godmother to a young woman called Emberella, who lives far away in Genua. Desiderata had promised Emberella previously that she will not marry the Duke, who's really a frog prince. Now it is up to Magrat and her companions Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg to ensure that Emberella does not marry the frog, despite the desires of another Witch in Genua called Lily ... By the way, Genua turns out to be the spitting image of New Orleans, including voodoo and gumbo soup.

It's a pleasure to see the threefold witchcraft take off, and as always, Granny is having problems to start her old, stuttering broomstick. I still giggle about a scene where Greebo accidentally kills a local vampire (who had terrorised the village for a long time) in his bat form.
This is one of the funniest Disc World novels, methinks.

Some quotes:
“No point in imagining anything,” said Granny. “Things are bad enough as they are.”
“What some people need, said Magrat, to the world in general, is a bit more heart. What some people need, said Granny Weatherwax to the stormy sky, is a lot more brain. Then she clutched at her hat to stop the wind from blowing it off. What I need, thought Nanny Ogg fervently, is a drink.”
“Greebo turned upon Granny Weatherwax a yellow-eyed stare of self-satisfied malevolence, such as cats always reserve for people who don’t like them, and purred. Greebo was possibly the only cat who could snigger in purr.”
