Pulled this from the bookbox. It sounds intriguing.
I liked the way this book was written; something like the Director's notes in a screenplay. The style lent itself well to the story, which was really a series of snapshots of the alcoholic regulars at a certain bar. As someone who once frequented bars quite a bit, and was something of a regular at Murphy's Bar in Clifton (near the University of Cincinnati), I could picture these men so clearly and felt like they were almost universal characters.
When I was a regular at Murphy's, it was because I was dating the bartender and because a group of us played in a dart league for the bar. I didn't drink like th men in "Ablutions". Few people could. But the scene was still very familiar and we had our homeless drunks there, the liver-diseased regulars sitting on their favorite barstools, day in and day out, and the old woman, Mary, who often brought in a crockpot full of something for the regulars to eat. I wonder if any of them are still even alive.
I was riveted to this book because it was so real. So decrepit, and depressing, and senseless.
I'd like to read more by this author.

The book was found on top of a soda machine with a post it note attatched to it that read "Please Take This Book". The title threw me off, as I am a Christian & "Ablutions" are ritual cleansings of the body or body part for religous rites or purposes, although I was once a bartender myself. I found the book to be grossly preverting of the profession. Some of the issues written about were somewhat on point, but many were very over dramatized.
