Journal Entry 1 by davemurray101 from Christiansted, US Virgin Islands US Virgin Islands on Sunday, August 23, 2009
Living in a no-bedroomed tenement flat, coping with the cold and boredom of busconducting and the bloody-mindedness of Head Office, knowing that emigrating to Australia is only an impossible dream, Robert Hines finds life to be ‘a very perplexing kettle of coconuts’. The compensations are a wife and child, and a gloriously anarchic imagination.

The Busconductor Hines is a brilliantly executed, uncompromising slice of the Glasgow scene, a portrait of working-class life which is unheroic but humane.

All I can say is that I did not enjoy this book. It appeared that the author had to put so many "F" words on a page. It turned me off. I forced myself to finish it because it is a 1001 book and was sent to me by another BCer. I will send it to another 1001 library member. I'll send it out either later this week or next week.

Well I've read it but can't really say I enjoyed it very much. It was very indicitive if Kelman as in it was full of swearing and had no speechmarks. I struggled getting around conversations at the beginning but soon got the hang of it.

The story seemed to be heading to a climax with the proposed strike but then nothing else seemed to happen and the novel just ended. I like a book that ends properly, lol. I disliked Hines but found myself having a little respect for Sandra and her love for him overcoming her growing dislike.

Anyway, another book ticked off the list and back to the library now.

Thanks for sending this my way! I won't read it as it's full of swearing but I know I'll find it a good home and keep it traveling!
