One of my favorite books of all time--and I am incapable of describing it. I first read it in '83 when it seemed like it would never be nudged from its No. 1 place on the New York Times best-seller list. But, I must have started it at least a half-dozen times, and I just could not get into it. (Friends say they had the same experience.) Then I got the flu and was trapped at home, so I figured I'd give it one last chance. I could not put it down--stayed up all night reading it. And all through the following day, and the next. (It's a long book.) I have since reread and reread it--or sometimes just single chapters. (The BC copy is a duplicate purchased for release.) You will either love it or hate it. There are no in-betweens with this one. For a taste of Helprin's writing, here's the opening sentence--also one of my favorite first lines in all of literature: "There was a white horse, on a quiet winter morning when snow covered the streets gently and was not deep, and the sky was swept with vibrant stars, except in the east, where dawn was beginning in a light blue flood." Aside from being poetic, he can also be very funny. Describing the New York newspaper The Ghost (read, New York Post): "...at one time a major crisis occurred when the newspaper divided into two factions--those who said that white wine came from fish and those who maintained that it didn't, although they either would not or could not say where it did come from."

I'm so glad you purchased a second copy to BookCross since you love it so much! I'm really looking forward to reading this. For the first time, I found a copy at my local bookstore and tried to convince my fellow book club members to read it. It looked overwhelmingly large to them and they decided that maybe they would save it for the winter . . . when they're cooped inside with nothing but a fireplace and a good book. On the other hand, I think I'll start this one before the winter sets it. It just looks like an amazing book, and I can't wait to read it.

This is currently my favorite book. So magical. Snow, stars, everything intertwined. If I could choose only one book to bring with me to a deserted island to read over and over again, this would be the one.
