Probably the most accessible of Xinran's books, and certainly the least depressing!
The title refers to a rural Chinese saying, that boys are the strong roof beams that support the family home, but girls are just chopsticks, good for very little. As Chinese economic policies open up, more and more of these "chopstick girls", unwanted by their families, move from the countryside to the cities to find work. Miss Chopsticks describes the journey of three sisters who discover their own worth in the big city.
