Product Description
Winner of the 1999 Pulitzer and Pen/Faulkner prizes, 'The Hours' is a daring and deeply affecting novel inspired by the life and work of Virginia Woolf. A passionate, profound and haunting story of love and inheritance, hope and despair which will be repackaged as part of Perennial's 2008 fiction promotion. Exiled in Richmond in the 1920s, taken from her beloved Bloomsbury and lovingly watched over by her husband Leonard, Virginia Woolf struggles to tame her rebellious mind and make a start on her new novel. In the brooding heat of 1940s Los Angeles, a young wife and mother yearns to escape the claustrophobia of suburban domesticity and read her precious copy of 'Mrs Dalloway'. And in New York in the 1990s, Clarissa Vaughan steps out of her smart Greenwich Village apartment and goes shopping for flowers for the party she is giving in honour of her life-long friend Richard, an award-winning poet whose mind and body are being ravaged by AIDS. These are the characters in Michael Cunningham's exquisite and deeply moving new novel, which takes Woolf's life and work as inspiration for a meditation on artistic behaviour, failure, love and madness.Moving effortlessly across the decades and between England and America, Cunningham's elegant, haunting prose explores the pain and trauma of creativity and the immutable relationship between writer and reader.
What a lovely, lovely surprise! Thak you so much sobergirl!
I sincerely loved this book! The three different stories are perfectly woven together. Thank you again for sending it to me, sobergirl. I also by the way think it made a splendid movie.

The book arrived safely yesterday. I'll start reading as soon as I can.
A wonderful book. I'm usually a fast reader but this book I had to read slowly - partly because I didn't want to miss anything and partly because of the beautiful language.
Thanks, Vilda, for sharing!
Now I'll send it on to Zimort.

First of all. The book is with me and I'm very sorry for the delay.
I really enjoyed the book and took my time reading it, but for the past month I've had so many things to do and sending the book has been postponed once to many.
Thank you Vilda for letting me be a part of the history of this book, it was a great experience. I already have madmegzy's address and will bring the book to the post office today.

It took me a while to get into this one. But frankly I am tired of this kind of "seamless masterpiece" which is so seamless that none of the characters were ever developed to the greatest extent possible. I have read Mrs. Dalloway, I know Virginia W., but I was disappointed in this Pulitzer Price winner. I expected more.
That was not really my cup of tea.
Posting to "MKtiny" as soon as I get an address.
This book will be followed by "The Beaufort Diaries".

Arrived this morning. This will be the next book I read, so hopefully I will not have it for too long.

Beautifully written, moving and haunting. The fallibilities of the characters are captured with incredible poignancy. Thanks for sharing Vilda and Sogergirl.
On its way to ToXiCKiTTiKiSS.

I received it, and I will read it as soon as I can. :)
Received in the mail today-I'm sure this will be my first book finished in 2012!
I have to start off by saying I've never read anything by Ms. Woolf. And from this book I'm tempted to read her biography. How hard of a life it must have been feeling and or needing to accomplish something as hard as writing a novel. To some authors I'm sure it's just an every day thing to crank the pages out, but to have to deal with your alter ego.....shew that's a mess.
I also must say that I think you must be of sound mind and a non-depressed person to read this book, because in some places it just got me down. Way down too. The hours are just passing us by. Seriously, I'm freaking 38 and can't tell you where the time has gone. Why is it as adults the time flies by but when we're children the phrase: It will take till Christmas to get here and that means a long time? When we as adults know it's around the corner? I'm glad I joined up for this ring and totally forgot about being on it.
Now off to the next person!
