Sun at Midnight

An epic love story and adventure set against the stunning backdrop of Antarctica. Alice Peel is a geologist. She believes in observation and proof. But now she stands alone on the deck of a rickety Chilean ship as a stark landscape reveals itself. Instead of the familiar measurable world, everything that lies ahead of her is unknown and unpredictable. Six weeks earlier her life was comfortably unfolding in an Oxford summer. Then, with her relationship suddenly in pieces, she accepted an invitation to join a group working at the end of the earth: Antarctica. James Rooker is a man on the run. He's been running since his childhood in New Zealand. Now, there is nowhere further to go. He has taken a job working on the same small Antarctic research station. Alice discovers an ice-blue and silver world, lit by sunlight. Nothing has prepared her for the beauty of it, or the claustrophobia of a tiny base shared with eight men and one other woman. The isolation wipes out everyone's past, and tension crackles in the air. But there is a jolt of recognition between Alice and Rooker that is like nothing she has ever known. And it is in Antartica that she discovers something else that will change her life forever! if she survives.

Got this book today - looks interesting and different from the j/e's. I don't think I've ever read fiction set in Antartica. This is ray #5, so will PM next in line so the mailing is ready to go as soon as I'm done. And thanks Annez for the postcard of where you live!
Penelopewanders was in no rush because of the holidays, so I pushed this ray to an after the holidays read.
Starting it now.
Update - lovely book with lush descriptions that can't be rushed. Can't speed read through this one! Done 300 out of almost 500 pages.

Wonderful book. Lush descriptions of the environment, although I can't imagine living in cramped quarters with the strangers. Trite finish, but I don't think I would want it to end any other way.
Will pack up tonight and post out to Switzerland tomorrow.

This arrived safely in the Alps today, thank you so much! Thank you too for the lovely card and bookmarks that came with it. I see that I'm at the end of the ray - I think I'll save it for a journey I have coming up in February where I should see a fellow bookcrosser - and could pass it on then. Otherwise I'll offer it up on the forum again once I've read it. I do have a few other rings and several work-related things in front of this, so I'll take advantage of the fact that no one is breathing down my neck. Looks like fun, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I get to it!

I didn't know anything about this author, but decided to sign up for this ray. What a delight. I loved reading about the Antarctic -and while reading it we had a presentation at our school about our earth which included quite a large section on the Antarctic... (red VW phenomenon)... I would have loved to have heard more about what happens to the characters afterwards, so I was left rather hungry for more. Only the very ending with the last minute meeting was a bit over the top to may taste... Nonetheless very enjoyable read, I look forward to finding more by this author.
I think I'll share this with some friends around here and then offer it to travel further. Thanks so much!
