For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and now grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined. Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced novel explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page. I've read all of Alice Sebold's book and this one was my favorite. 09/30-mailed to LoriPed for Marlene's b-day swap

This took me awhile to get through because I would start it and then get frustrated with the characters and plot. I finally hit a spot where I couldn't put it down and had to finish it. I think one of the reasons I had a hard time getting started on this is that it was too close to home. Both my parents are at a point in their lives where they need more supervision and help than they are willing to accept. Before long we will have to step in and force them to realize that changes must be made.
