I absolutely loved Disney's movie adaption of this book when I was growing up. But don't be fooled! They took a lot of liberties with the book, including cutting out and adding new characters.
Enjoyed the first half of this book very much, but then it just got to be more of the same ol' same ol'. One family surviving on an island by discovering new plants and animals for their sustenance and comfort. (There's a reason Disney threw in some pirates!)
I could tell early on that I would be terrible annoyed at the 'Father knows best' character in this novel. The narrator, the father, always thinks he has the answer. Also, if he had spent as much time reading as he said, I really can't believe he would be able to apply that knowledge in the real life. He discovered what every plant and animal on the island was by dint of having read about it in a book - including how they could use it to their advantage. The father also thought he knew more than anyone. Anytime one of the boys did something wrong, he would point it out and then do it right. Anytime they did something right, he would point out that their motive or method was wrong, but 'very good job nonetheless.' He also kept making explosions and sneaking out to meet people without telling anyone else. I really didn't like him by the end!
The boys were fun and overall a fun adventure/desert island read.

Forgot I had given to my sister's family. Saw it at her house last month.
