The Red Queen: A Transcultural Tragicomedy
2 journalers for this copy...
I read this for book club and found it interesting, if a bit odd. The book is comprised of two parts. The first is the memoir of 'Lady Hyegyong' a Korean princess, who relates how she came to be betrothed to the crown prince, her mad husband, and her husband's death at the hand of his father (amongst other things). The second half of the book relates the story of Dr Babs Halliwell who travels to Korea to give a paper at a medical (??) conference and reads the crown princesses memoirs on the plane trip over. Babs is quite affected by the Princess' story, but other than that, links between the two stories seemed pretty superficial. I probably enjoyed the princess's tale better, which was a fascniating insight into Korean culture. Through Bab's I kept waiting for an 'aha' moment when the two halves would merge into one, and I didn't achieve that.

I enjoyed the first section of this book more than the second section. She could have done a lot more with the links between the 2 main characters. I found the subject matter very interesting as I know little about Korea. It was still a good read.
Will pass this onto a friend who will enjoy reading it.
