The peaceful lives of the inhabitants of Turnham Malpas are disrupted when a famous actor comes to stay to recuperate from illness. Before long he is bored by village life and when he meets Caroline, the Rector's wife, he is instantly attracted to her. He agrees to direct and star in a play with the villagers as his supporting cast and Caroline as his leading lady... When Peter, Caroline's husband, realises the attraction between her and Hugo goes beyond the scenes on stage, he has to use all his powers of patience and diplomacy as he tries to contain a potentially heartbreaking situation.

It has been a while so I thought I was due another visit to Turnham Malpas.

I found this one particularly gripping. Dr Harris, the Rector's wife, falls completely under the spell of Hugo Maude. Whilst she isn't alone it appears he has eyes only for her.

His presence sparks a series of events in the village. Will all come good in the end?
