This book is a must read. The fact that it is a true story is horrifying! I didn't care for the way the author took almost the whole book to do a build up to the "moment." But still it was interesting to read about how it all came about and the people involved. I think it would be grand if most Americans could read this -- and books like it -- as it really does make you realize how blessed we are in this country despite our many flaws and problems. This book *will* make you realize that in a BIG way.

Arrived safely today in an amazingly generous box of items...books, and candy, and goodies...OH MY!! Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness...you humble me with your generosity, and kind words!

This sounds like an amazing book, and I look forward to reading it very soon.

Update 7/10/10: While I didn't particularly care for the author's writing style, this was still a *must read* book. We hear about stoning as a punishment throughout the biblical years, and know that in some areas it still occurs in certain cultures, but the true horrific details of such a means of killing are most often glossed over. This book includes a look at the "offenses" that led up to the stoning and how it was 'justified', a glimpse inside the workings of a mob mentality and the peer pressure that is involved, a and a *very* graphic & chilling description of the stoning itself. How something like this can still be taking place in this day and age is totally beyond me...it's absolutely horrifying.

Ahhh...my friend, dg7500, you know me well. I am very excited about reading this one. I do like reading about other cultures especially when it is a woman sharing her story with the world. I will be reading this one quickly so it can continue its travels to interested BC friends. Thank you for sharing this with me.

I just finished Soraya's story and cried. I cried for her and all the woman that have been sentenced, like Soraya, unjustly to a death by stoning. It is barbaric, undignified and done soley at the whim of men and a cheering crowd of villagers.

I hope this book is read by many women across the globe to honor this woman who led a life like many: girl, daughter, student, wife, and mother. May it show us how grateful we should be to be born with freedom and entitled by birth to justice. Where lies and rumors do not feed a violent blood hungry crowd in the name of religion.

This is why, sometimes, I get mad when I watch TV and see men in a undershirt and they call it a 'wifebeater.' When I see teens so easily submit to bad behavior by boys because they think it is cool. It is not cool. They are giving away their rights as a human being to someone who does not deserve it. Read this book and try to think of all these things, my friends. You might think it a bit far fetched but it leads us far away from everything our women ancestors have fought to give us: freedom, rights, liberty, justice, right to vote, freedom of choice (yes even that).

I thank the author for sharing this story with us and enlightening us. Yes, these things happen far from us. It doesn't matter where it happens or to whom because bottom line is if it is happening to one of us, it happens to all. Tonight my prayers will include Soraya.

What an absolutely horrific story. The mob mentality and peer pressure of those involved in the stoning of Soraya is mind boggling. Although there are flaws within our own judical system, it is set up in such a way to protect the innocent. This story is certainly eye-opening. I will be passing this book on as it is a story that must be shared.

WOW! After reading this story it makes me glad that I was born and live in the US at this time in history where at least we as women have rights. The Iranian women are second class citizens and cannot speak up to men to defend themselves. Her husband falsely accuses Soraya of adultery (something he was guilty of) to get out of his marriage. I was especially mad at Hashem, who buckled under the peer pressure, and lied about Soraya after all the help she had given him after the untimely death of his wife. Her kindness is what was used against her in the end.
