Call it a techno-thriller, I guess, but that's pretty normal for Michael Crichton.

I'd read this quite a while ago but I received this copy for giving away, so I thought I'd read it again. Still creepy - teeny tiny Frankenstein's monsters by the millions. Someone even challenged it in Texas in 2004/2005.

Most of the story takes place out in the Nevada desert. I've been to Nevada a couple of times, and I'll probably go again someday. I found lots of interesting facts about the 36th state here. This page gives three different nicknames for Nevada - Sagebrush State, Silver State, Battle-Born State - I don't know if any other states have so many different official nicknames.
