I picked up this, and a couple of other books from someone's paper recycling bin as I walked to the station this morning. I was running late or I'd have searched through the rest of the box for more books. I am so glad I picked this particular book up though as it has a note in the inside cover which reads:

'Hello there,
I've just finished this (May 2008), and not wishing to cart it across the Atlantic Ocean, I have left it for you, tired passenger, beset by tedium. It's very good and very dark.
Enjoy and safe journey,

Caitlin Parrish

p.s. Not for those with weak stomachs.

p.p.s Really not for those unwilling to parse through Scottish dialects.'

At first I thought I was going to find a BCID but then I searched for an email address without any luck. I guess it must have been left on a train/plain or ferry. Shame Caitlin Parrish didn't know about Bookcrossing.

This book was not an easy read but not wholy unenjoyable. It is some sort of hybrid between a Coupland and an Irvine but falls just short of both. Having said all of that, the character of Morvern is utterly mesmerising and I was desperate for something decent to happen with/for her, something more wholesome than what did happen for her anyway.

A vague meander through the 90s rave culture and a wander through two very different isolated island lives Morvern seemed to be part of everyone and everything while remaining compltely aloof and unconnected to anything.

I would love to have spent some more time with Morvern and seen her develop somehow.
