The Secret Adversary
This Agatha Christie classic concerns the early adventures of Tommy and Tuppence. In their search for a living in post-war London they hit on the idea of advertising themselves as ready to undertake anything, or almost anything, for adequate reward. As chance would have it their discussion is overheard by a mysterious Mr Whittington of an equally mysterious Esthonia Glassware Company who has a strange proposition to make. The mention of Tuppence's casually selected alias, however, has an odd effect on Mr Whittington: first fury, and then an anxiety to soothe his astonished employee-to-be. Tuppence finds herself the surprised recipient of an immediate payment of 50 pounds in advance of services to be rendered. But the next day the odd Mr Whittington has vanished, and the Esthonia Glassware Company has locked its offices and apparently gone out of business. It seems that the name chosen by Tuppence - Jane Finn - is that of a young American who had vanished under very strange circumstances five years before.
