This book is to be released as a part of the 2009 LUCIA Challenge set by LyzzyBee. During the month of September, the plan is to release books to raise awareness of the LUCIA charity . As the charity supports women, the theme for the release is WOMEN'S ROLES, with words like grandmother, mother, daughter, wife, aunt, princess, queen, nun... in the title.

The Lady and the Unicorn is the modern title given to a series of six tapestries woven in Flanders of wool and silk, from designs ("cartoons") drawn in Paris in the late fifteenth century. The suite is often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. The specific weavers and artist who designed them are unknown, so this book is a fictional account of how they were created.

I loved the photos of the tapestry and found it interesting to consider the possible meanings behind the figures and what they were doing. Overall I was disappointed by the book as I found the relationship between Nicolas and Claude to be unbelievable, and thought Aliénors solution to her predicament was unimaginative and predictable. I found the characters shallow and the historical aspect to be superficial. I have read the books of several better historical writers and thought the quotes from reviews listed to be over generous.

We enjoyed this much more than the first reader: Tracy Chevalier has a talent for research and then developin g this into an enthralling story - the actual photos add to the story of course, but we found the relationships convincing - it will be interesting to see what others make of it..... we certainly would read more of her books.

A brilliant read - in all senses of the word! A great structure, and a world to delight the senses. Educative too - never given much thought to tapestries before! Tracy Chevalier can certainly write! Will seek out those of her books I've not yet read.
Intend to pass on at Nostrell Priory, near Wakefield, today. (Accomplished - in the cafe.)
'Caravanner' Janet, Huddersfield.
