9 out of 10

Volume three in the late-Victorian life of this highly engaging author. Somewhat mis-named, as we follow her through a series of lodgings during her early teaching career, and the setting up of a new teacher training college at Bedford College London - not to mention the Chicago World Fair, where she represents her college at an Educational Conference, and a quick trip into Canada 'whilst she's in the area'. Only towards the end of the volume does she finally set up home with her barrister husband, after a 10 year engagement. Even the loss of their infant daughter cannot cloud the joys of bringing up the three sons that follow.

The Author speaks of her 'commonplace' life, and she has a talent for bringing the everyday to joyous life - but commonplace? I don't think so!

On it's way to Annimanni.

I loved this book, it was lovely to read about the next stage in Molly's life up to the early years of her marriage.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one too. I especially enjoyed the parts on Molly's trips abroad as well as those describing her experiences as a new mother (I have a seven-month-old son myself). I wholeheartedly agree with this point of view:

"Well, if children always did exactly as they were told, were always unthinkingly obedient, how could the world advance? And how dull it would be."

However, as in the previous books, there were those grating moments too. And quotes that stick to mind - not in a good way:

"There had been a great deal of argument in the press as to whether a woman ought to promise to obey her husband, and some brides had omitted the word. So I said my 'obey' firmly, feeling the pleasure of having no longer to order other people's lives, but to be ordered myself."

I received this book in the mail today. I haven't even gotten to the first two yet. I keep putting them at the end because there is nobody after me on the ring, so I'm not stalling other readers. If this is a problem, let me know, and I will return them to owner and read at a later time. Thanks,
Ruth

8 out of 10

Molly's life sure did go through some changes this decade. Traveling to America, getting married having and losing a baby daughter, and giving birth to sons. I'm looking forward to following Molly's life further. I am going to read a different book in between though, but will get back to this series within the week. Sent on today to next reader.
