No Country for Old Men

"Llewelyn Moss, hunting antelope near the Rio Grande, instead finds men shot dead, a load of heroin, and more than $2 million in cash. Packing the money out, he knows, will change everything. But only after two more men are murdered does a victim’s burning car lead Sheriff Bell to the carnage out in the desert, and he soon realizes how desperately Moss and his young wife need protection. One party in the failed transaction hires an ex–Special Forces officer to defend his interests against a mesmerizing freelancer, while on either side are men accustomed to spectacular violence and mayhem. The pursuit stretches up and down and across the border, each participant seemingly determined to answer what one asks another: how does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?
A harrowing story of a war that society is waging on itself, and an enduring meditation on the ties of love and blood and duty that inform lives and shape destinies, No Country for Old Men is a novel of extraordinary resonance and power."

Another very well-written novel by McCarthy, who I've come to regard as one of my favorites. However, if you like neat & tidy endings, you may want to steer clear of this, & other, of his novels. In addition, this one's got plenty of in-your-face violence. I did the majority of this on audio, & in all honesty, Tom Stechschulte really makes this novel come alive (just as he did with McCarthy's "On the Road"), whereas the flow of the book is a little harder to follow when reading the book itself. As a book read, I think it would be good. As an audio, it's excellent. It doesn't have a neat & tidy ending, & some readers may have trouble with the rather abrupt transitions, especially near the end. I myself found this a little troubling, & that's why my rating isn't higher than it already is. I'm off to go rent the movie now!
Placing into my CD Audio BookBox (2).
Took out of indygo88's CD Audio Bookbox (2)!
Like indygo88 said, this book has plenty of in-your-face violence, but I knew that going in since I had already seen the movie. I also agree that Tom Stechschulte did a great job capturing the characters' individual voices and have to wonder if HE had seen the movie first, too. I enjoyed McCarthy's writing style and realistic-sounding dialogue. The story never seemed formulaic: where I expected it to zig, it zagged, in both the action and the philosophical musings. Definitely thought-provoking.
I plan to add this to the next audio bookbox that heads my way.

Gave to Sister No. 6 to listen to while she does a little remodeling.
Back from Sister No. 6, who did listen because she had seen the film and knew the story, so her mind didn't wander. She liked it because it was faithful to the film.*sigh*
Sending to PaulsBooks/tostle as part of iwillrejoice's Audio VBB. Enjoy!
I received this book! Thanks so much for sending it.
Brent It was a good book but very violent.
This book is going into booklady331's CD ONLY Audio Book Box. Happy travels!
I could have sworn that I had journaled this when I took it out of the bookbox. I started it last night.
I think McCarthy is becoming one of my favorite authors. I had seen the movie, but like always the book is better. I the way he has of leaving so much action off the page, where he could have intense scenes he instead flashes to the aftermath. Not many authors could do this and still have the story remain so compelling.
I put this in BigJohnLefty's audio bookbox.
This book has made a short stop at my house. It will continue on its journey until it finds its new home.
This came in my Audiobookbox when it returned home to me.

Several BookCrosers whose views I respect have said here that McCarthy is becoming a favorite author. This fits in with his work's many critical raves, and the McArthur "Genius grant." But this is one author who's left me far behind, standing on the pier.
Maybe it's because I disliked the main character, Llewelyn Moss. He seemed determined to fit himself into the John-Wayne strong & silent, no personal relationship model. He consistently ignored his wife and refused to tell her anything, all the while leading her into more deadly danger(He does express regret when he realizes he's going to lose his truck). Even flat on his back in a hospital bed, he's saying "I'm fine! Don't need any help!"
Maybe his stupidity earns him his fate (stupidity: if you stumble into the scene of a bad drug deal, with heroin and dead bodies all over the landscape, go ahead and take the suitcase with $2 million. People in that business will just shrug their shoulders and let you keep it.). But I felt sorry for all the people who had the back luck to to be standing next to him at the wrong times.
I agree with all the previous posters about Tom Stechschulte's excellent performance. I did read 'The Road' and did not like it, but I can see that it would have been a lot better read aloud. Our library system has 188 titles recorded by him, so maybe I'll give some of them a try.
But that's just one person's opinion. Future listeners, what do YOU think of this book?

I picked this out from The BigJohnLefty VBB. Thanks for sending it my way.
My husband and I listened to this on the roadtrip down to Florida. It really held our attention. Really enjoyed the storyline , the characters and the action. This was the first book I've "read" by Cormac McCarthy. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on another. Thanks for sharing!
Sending this well traveled audiobook onto a bookcrosser who seems to like thrillers. Maybe you can take it on one of your roadtrips. Merry Christmas!
Received today.
Thank you, so much, for sending this my way.
Looking forward to listening to it.

Attempted to listen to this with my husband but we both kept falling asleep. We listened to a couple of the discs twice but neither of us really cared about any of it and it got to the point where we just wanted to be done with it. Guess it's just not our kind of book.
