The only problem, when I am sending you a book, is I get really tempted on reading it first! But with my bookrings right now, there is no time at all for one more. I hope it is a book you will enjoy, after all, according to a greek song in a bad translation (from me!): "Beautiful is the sea, because it's always moving/ and if you have seen a lot of lands, in none of them can you anchor". Well there is a reason why I am not a translator, but I hope you understand what I mean! Kisses!

Just got a message that a parcel has arrived for me at the "Packstation" (some kind of P.O.Box, accessible at all times, just around the corner from where I live, great if you're not at home when the mail comes). I went over, typed in my code, a little door opened and there it was ... :-) A lovely surprise from contraforsa! I'm overwhelmed. Thank you so much!!!! Another book from my wishlist, I wanted to read it for ages (well, actually since it won the Booker Prize in 2005). I should make a little trip up to the North Sea to start reading it there...

Journal Entry 4 by wingApoloniaXwing from Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Sunday, July 5, 2009
I had just finished Atonement and was afraid whatever I might read next might seem shallow... far off. What a beautiful, poetic, powerful language! Sometimes I found it hard to concentrate, I kept drifting off following my own thoughts and associations, but so what. It is no story told directly, it meanders around the present and memories of the past, with lots of rapid shifts... until the final revelations. It's full of melancholy, centered on topics of loss and grief, on love and death.
Started it sitting on a dike top at the North Sea...

august: I finished reading the book during my vacation. I found it hard to concentrate on the story, but on the other hand I was eager to know what had happened.

Arrived!

Journal Entry 10 by wingruzenawing on Friday, September 18, 2009
First published 2005 (Picador). PB 2005. 264 pages.

Beautiful! Reminded me of Virginia Woolf, and also of the many books in which an elderly man goes back to the important experiences in his childhood and youth, seeing at last the importance of those events to the rest of his life. Thus, nothing brand-new -- just the astonishing way he puts it into words. I'd like to read it once more, in my own language, but apparently no one has solved the problem of translating the dream with the typewriter that lacks the letter I :D
All in all, I liked the book very much. Thanks to you all who contributed :)

Book arrived safe and sound, will get to it as soon as I can

24 Oct 09 This book was like being in someones head going over their memories, skipping back and forth, going off on a tangent. I did find that if I lost concentration for a bit I would loose me way because of the way it was written, so would have to go back a couple of paragraphs to find myself again. I found it an interesting read and look forward to reading more by this author. Just waiting for the address of the next person so I can send it on it's way.

I'm so sorry to have kept this for so long. It got tidied away with a pile of books over Christmas. I did find it hard to get through but got there in the end. Huge apologies for the delay. I will pm the next person for their address straight away.

This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read; a real work of art. I found it incredibly moving, but funny in places. John Banville's poetic style of writing creates extremely vivid images; full of colour and texture. A real treat. Thanks for sharing. On its way to Caroley tomorrow.

Journal Entry 21 by Caroley from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, May 21, 2010
Received today thanks!

I've got a couple of other bookrings to read first but should get to it fairly quickly.

Journal Entry 22 by Caroley at Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, May 28, 2010
I quite enjoyed this. I liked the way it went back and forth in time and the way it led up to the ending. The writing style was easy on the eye too.

Thanks for organising the ray ApoloniaX. I've PMd Sardonyx for an address, and hope to post the book on after the bank holiday.

30/05/10 - PMd again with copy box unchecked due to problems with new site/PMs going missing.
