"Meet Karl Glogauer, time traveller and unlikely Messiah. When he finds himself in Palestine in the year 29AD he is shocked to meet the man known as Jesus Christ -- a drooling idiot, hiding in the shadows of the carpenter's shop in Nazareth. But if he is not capable of fulfilling his historical role, then who will take his place?"

A disconcerting scifi novella. Unfortunately a bit overlooked until recently.

It is unbelievable what Moorcock achieves in such a short book. When I first received the book in the post I flipped through it and thought it looked quite scrappy but no, quite the opposite. Often, in just a few short sentences, the author conveys an amazing amount - mood, Karl's uncertainties, his frustration (boy did Monica get on my nerves) and most importantly he also foreshadows events. I will definitely be looking out for more books by this author. Once again, thank you Dave. This book is off to Cat for a short detour.

Thanks Deb (and Dave), Really enjoyed our catch up today. Love you. X

As I suspected it is similar to 'Mission' by Patrick Tilley - in one The Man goes back in time, in the other forward.

Thanks Deb and Dave. Will bring to the meeting at Pippi's on Thursday. X

Quite the shocking little novel! I'm sure any believing Christian would find this book to be blasphemous - I mean it portrays Mary as a lascivious adulterer, Jesus as a drooling idiot, and the savior of man as a mentally unstable follower of Carl Jung from the future. I found this novella (winner of the Nebula award for best novella in 1967) to be very thought-provoking and I was quite impressed with the whole premise of the story. I would recommend this one to anyone who has an open mind about the origins of Christianity.

Thanks Dave for sharing this one! I have elidanora's address and will be getting this in the mail to Argentina.

I arrived home from a week away to find the book waiting for me. What a great suprise.

I have already started it, and do not think that it will take me long to finish. Thanks for sending this my way.

Journal Entry 17 by bookowl1000 from Wuhan, Hubei China on Thursday, December 3, 2009
I found Karl to be a very flawed yet sympathetic character; someone who was so unhappy/confused about his own life that he was prepared to travel back in time to try and find enlightenment. In the end Karl steps in and creates a self fulfiling prophecy.

Moorcock addresses the philosophical question of whether or not the historical Jesus need actually have existed. Must something really happen historically for the myth surrounding it to be meaningful? Which is more important, legend or history? I ask myself, does it matter if an historical Jesus was the son of God or not?

I did not want this book to end its journey with me so I advertised it in the fourm. There were two takers.

Got home yesterday from a couple of weeks away and decided to get it in the post before Christmas. Woke up to lots of snow which meant a long brisk walk to the post office as the husband said "you cannot drive in these conditions". It is amazing how a little bit of snow can bring the UK to a standstill, but it will be nice to have a white Chtristmas.

I then added to the stress levels of the man in the post office who spent a long time working out the correct combination of stamps to put on the package (long Christmas queue behind me!).

The book is now on its way back to Australia to piemunga who has agreed to then send the book on to Jujuks in Portugal when she has finished with it.

I checked with davemurray101 and he does not want the book back so it is then up to Jujuks to release the book in whatever way is most appropriate.

ENJOY!

arrived today - thank you! I shall get to it when I finish my current book (hopefully no longer than a week!)

I really enjoyed this book, despite being a Christian! Whilst I can definitely see why people might be offended by it, I am open to different ideas and since this is purely fiction I found it to be a very interesting one. I thought it was clever and thought provoking, and very inventive.

I'll contact Jujuks for their address.....
