Synopsis:
In this emotionally charged novel, Jodi Picoult delves beneath the surface of a small town to explore what it means to be different in our society.

In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One final incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents.

Even those who were not inside the school that morning find their lives in an upheaval, including Alex Cormier. The superior court judge assigned to the Houghton case, Alex—whose daughter, Josie, witnessed the events that unfolded—must decide whether or not to step down. She’s torn between presiding over the biggest case of her career and knowing that doing so will cause an even wider chasm in her relationship with her emotionally fragile daughter. Josie, meanwhile, claims she can’t remember what happened in the last fatal minutes of Peter’s rampage. Or can she? And Peter’s parents, Lacy and Lewis Houghton, ceaselessly examine the past to see what they might have said or done to compel their son to such extremes.

Rich with psychological and social insight, Nineteen Minutes is a riveting, poignant, and thought-provoking novel that has at its center a haunting question. Do we ever really know someone?

Gelukkig goed aangekomen.

Another great book by Jodi Picoult. She describes characters so well, making you see all their points of view and understanding what is going on with them. And, as always, there was the totally unexpected twist in the end - although it makes some sense by little hints throughout the book.

My favourite character was Alex, for being so strong and so human with all her doubts.

The book will travel on as soon as I get an address. Thanks for sharing, Wandelaartje!
Edit: book was sent on 1 September 2009 to antonettes. Happy reading!

What an amazing book (again) by Jodi Picoult. For some reason she always manages to make you love the characters no matter how evil they are/seem. It almost took me two weeks to finish this one because I wanted to read it thorougly and like Wandering said, the little twist in the end is a nice surprise. Picoult is definetely one of my favorite authors by now... will send a pm to the next reader...

**edit 29-10** het boek is gisteren op de post gegaan naar Sonje. Veel leesplzier!

Another great book by Jodi Picoult. I've read only one of her books before, but I think she's a very interesting writer, especially after I discovered that My sister's keeper, which I've seen as a movie, is also hers. She's excellent at taking a story and telling it from a different view, I really like that! It's the same with this book: although you can feel that something isn't quite right, I was still surprised by the end. And if I would have been in the jury, who knows what my decision would have been. I feel for this poor kid, that doesn't fit into this world, and is just a little too soft to survive in everyday life until one day he snaps.
I'm sorry that it took me a little longer than planned to read it, usually I finish books really fast, but although the language isn't difficult to follow, this book did use some of my intellectual capacity :) I will make sure it will go to Emmeken ASAP.

What an impressive book! I totally agree with the previous readers. Very well written and I love the fact how she forces you to think twice about all the different characters. You start reading the book, already having an opinion and certain feelings about Peter, but she manages to make you adjust or at least doubt these feelings. Just like in My Sister's Keeper, it has a surprising plot-end, however not TOO surprising which is good, in my opinion.
Thanks for ringing this great book, Wandelaartje!

EDIT: the book is going home; I will send it to Wandelaartje in a few days.
