I got this book from the Citizens for the Charles County Public Library, Inc. (C4CCPL) April Used-Book Bazaar. On the last day of the sale, Saturday 25 April, 2009 they had a sale where you could take home all of the books that you could pack into a paper bag for $1 per bag.

I managed to bring home 11 bags and one of those bags included this book. I have many books to release and some to add to my mountain of books "To Be Read". I hope this book finds a good home when it is time for me to release it.

From the back cover:

GROWING UP ON THE THRIVING PLANTATION CALLED THE MEADOWS,
LILLIAN BOOTH CHERISHES THE BRIGHTEST, HAPPIEST DREAMS ....

Lillian's world is full of grand parties, of sunshine and promises, as thrilling as the fairy tales Mama spins for her and her little sister, Eugenia. No one, not even her cold, stern Papa and her Bible-spouting sister Emily, can crush her spirits - until the day Emily reveals the shattering secret of Lillian's birth, a secret Mama sadly cannot deny. Still Lillian refuses to believe Emily's hateful claim that she is evil, a curse ... even when sweet, gentle Eugenia loses her fragile hold on life, and Mama retreats further into her fantasies. But when tragedy befalls her best friend, the one boy whose tender heart mirrors her own, Lillian comes to believe Emily's grim words. Meekly, she endures her penance, finding a strange solace in the endless repetition of prayers in a room stripped of all comforts. Lillian's heart is torn anew when, in a drunken haze, Papa subjects her to the most brutal degredation. Then Papa loses The Meadows in a card game, and Lillian is faced with a new and terrifying prospect. Arrogant, handsome playboy Bill Cutler will return the plantation - if Lillian will marry him! Now Lillian must leave her girlhood home behind, and make a bold new beginning as the mistress of a hotel called Cutler's Cove ....

I read a different copy of this book in September 2007 and here are the comments I had at that time.

Some will say that because the events of this book happen in time before the events of Dawn that this will be the first book in the series but I maintain that it should be read last. There are revelations in this book that can change the outlook of characters and I think that it is vital that these things are discovered after all of the players are long gone.

This book tells of the childhood of Lillian, her crazy religious sister, and the beloved Eugenia that was taken from them far too young. Here we see why Lillian wanted Dawn to embrace the name Eugenia that she was given at birth and why Lillian doesn't have much to do with her own family.

It amazes me that such a young girl can be as evil and uncaring as Emily can be. What strange things she thinks and her religion is horrid to those around her. Of course, Lillian is not her true sister and that gives Emily even more reasons to torment and torture her. When Lillian becomes convinced that she is in fact a curse it is no surprise the events that unfold resulting in the birth of Charlotte. At least the reader can get a small measure of calm as it is realized incest is not a factor at least in the sense that there is shared blood between Lillian and her Papa.

A marriage of convenience does not seem all that out of place especially when thinking about the times and the circumstances involved. It turns out to be just the thing that Lillian needs because as the queen of Cutler's Cove she finds her element and becomes the strong and capable ruler of the Cutler legacy.

This book will be travelling to the Kansas City UnConvention that is being held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas this weekend and was chosen because it fits one or more release challenges that I am participating in. This book may be snatched from the book buffet available in the hotel, be wild released from road trip to and from the event, or be distributed on our various excursions throughout the weekend. I will try and make release notes when I can but if a journal entry comes before that then I may edit this journal entry with release challenge information or details about where I released the book into the wild.
